Hi People,
I'm thinkin of changing completely to full synthetic
Right now I'm using PENZ 40 in the engine and 10/30 in the overdrive.
Question #1 Is Synthetic good, like any better??
#2 Do I need to flush the engine before changing ??
Ive heard some good things about synthetic.
Anyone got opinions they might want to share,I guess that's three
I'm also running straight STP in the pump and think I'll keep it that way?
That might be four. _________________ FORD=Power for the thrills of life!

That synthetic thing has baffled me for a couple of years.First 10 people I asked swear by it and the next 10 people said stay away.Kinda sitting on the fence right now until my motor has enough hrs to use it,then I'll decide.-CL |

I've always been led to believe that you break in the motor with natural oil, then after 10-15 hrs change to synthetic oil. It is more resistant to heat and water contamination. Makes sense to me, being that a jetboat runs at high RPM for extended amounts of time. For the extra cost of the oil compared to the cost of a motor, it's an easy choice. |

Baldy is right, synthetic is far superior to mineral oil when it comes to heat resistance. Think of it like your engine oil boiling between the surfaces, ( crank and bearings ) synthetic will stay together at higher temperatures. _________________ Bulls Eye Enterprises Inc.

Thanks Guys,
This BBF runs 200deg. @ 3000rpm with the oil cooler.
There is more than enough hours on it to switch.
Do I need to do a flush before switching? (I'm thinkin not)
This year I'm going to be running a little harder. _________________ FORD=Power for the thrills of life!

15/50 is good but its getting hard to get, seems like canadian tire only wants to stock 5/50 which is what im using. Ive used mobil 1 for years in my family boat and always had good luck. _________________ HANG ON NUTLICKER !! |

Hey AIIOTR,
I too am having a bit of a hard time finding 15/50 Synth.
It seems theres lots of 5/40-50 around.
I heard from a Auto Racer that if you got any small oil leaks now, using regular oil, you will have leaks ten fold with the synthetic
I have some minor leaks maybe one
I guess if I'm going to use Synthetic, I better replace some gaskets no?
I was told that not only does it have resistance to heat, but it does not
foam at the higher rpms. _________________ FORD=Power for the thrills of life!

Hi Art II:
You mentioned that you heard some negatives about the synthetic.
I am indeed curious to what they are saying!
Care to share??
Outside of putting the house up for collateral to buy some, I can't think of any. Oh yeah, the leak thing
Cheers and good on Ya!

RC,
Lot of just hear say and opinion's over the years. The one that put me on the fence is a engine builder I know that listed a few things, but that was many beers ago and I have trouble remembering yesterday. His opinion just stuck in my head cause I know he knows engine's, and high performance.I guess if a engine wants to blow....it will probably just blow no matter what |

Thanks Arthur II:On the rocks
I would like to get some more info on synthetic before I commit.
I heard through the grapevine that Pennzoil was changing the formula
for their 40/wt oil and it doesn't impress me very much.
I am confused as to what oil I should go with.
Having said that, what are you race guys using??
I mean if it's good enough for you guys, it's gotta be good enough
for my barge
What say you?
Cheers ,

For more oil info than you even thought existed.........

oil is a changin' and some of these folks seem to have a good handle on it. Like every forum, you need to read a lot and ponder. _________________ "faster, Faster, FASTER until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of DEATH"#163 "Tuff-n'-Nuff" |
