Hey Everyone,

I have recently purchased my first Jetboat (20' Clearwater) and I wanted get some advice on what people bring along with them on those 2 day or longer trips with the boat. Things such as : Full change of oil???, spare starter???, certain tools???, Spare nozzle???...ETC.

I would like to hear what you pack along in your boat.

Good thread Moose Man.
- Lots of good rope.
- At least one red / orange buoy.
- Good water proof first aid kit (2 if possible).
- Flashlights & GSP & Sat phone if you are going where cells don't work.
- Beer & rum.
- Dry footwear; Even a crappy ole pair of running shoes. Wet feet suck.
- Bear scares or gun.
- Wire, ties, hose clamps, vise grips & JB Weld (must have).
- Hose for siphoning gas.
- Money in small denominations (if you in Mexico!!).
Lots of other things that can be added.

Congratulations on your purchase. As I was reading your post it got me thinking. I'm pretty sure I asked the same question when I joined up here. Instead of searching back a couple of yrs of post's I'll just tell you what I've got/needed over the past 3 summers......

Spare starter -(a very important part on my boat)
Used cap and rotor-(threw it in because I had room in my trunk)
New plugs
Oil filter and 5L of oil
First aid kit
Rope-(Lots of good rope)
Flare's and Bear scare's
Pistol grip shotgun for overnighters
Fuel filter
All the tools you'll think you need + a couple other things...
Ass. of fuses
All thread
HI Temp silicone
JB Weld
Transmission fluid(Place Diverter)<Can't keep mine in one piece
A bit of spare hose various size's
Emergency bottle of RUM

The last ones not a must have...but you'll thank me if you ever need it

How about a tube of sika-flex to patch up those minor to middle mishaps, it sticks like sh!t to a blanket and i have personally constructed/stuck together an assortment of things with this stuff ( how do you think we got Dave to look like this ) and it could probably be used as a great party gag though you didn't hear it from me.

Don't forget the trail mix, Advil and Tums/Zantac. 3 lighters. More rum. Dark glasses cause you are now a lot cooler! Don't forget a touque, it can snow in July!

When i went threw my boat before i sold it i had 4 different rolls in zip locks in various places in the boat. I guess that time i had to cut the tops of my socks off bugged me!

I carry a dedicated tool kit for my boat. At minimum you need a crescent wrench, vise grips, pliers, spark plug wrench, 5/16-3/4 wrenches, a file and a good quality multi screwdriver. A good 70+ piece tool kit from Costco or Canadian tire works as a great addition. Spare fuses, electrical wire, mini torch, electrical tape, test light, multi meter, heavy duty large flat screwdriver, small assortment of nuts, bolts flat and lock washers, WD40, etc.

Sometime near the beginning of the season I take a couple of hours and pull my starter off, pull it apart, service it, clean up the brushes and contacts. This greatly reduces starter problems through the year.

Also, at the beginning of every year you should check all your drive belts, carry some spares and replace them if there is any sign of wear or age. Listen carefully to your engine for any strange noises from either it or your alternator or water pump. Check carefully for oil or antifreeze leaks. Make sure your bilge pumps are working and the pick ups are clear of debris. Keep your pump thrust bearing and bowl greased through out the summer.

Pack spare spark plugs and fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, 2 litres of engine oil, 2 pairs of hip or chest waders, mechanics gloves, I find a machete is far more useful and lighter then an axe or hatchet. If used properly a machete can cut down a tree nearly as fast as an axe and yet it has a thin enough blade to cut wiener sticks. Booster cables (optional).

I carry all my safety gear in a separate packsack that is kept easily accessible so it can be grabbed in an emergency situation. This is what I carry in it;

Spare socks in a water tight bag, a couple of garbage bags, good size first aid kit, emergency blanket, 2-3 different sunscreens, heavy duty string (many uses), Aloe Vera Cream, light sticks, 2 flashlights (1- mini flashlight) with extra batteries, bug bite pen, bug spray, 30+/- ft 3/8 rope, leatherman knife, hunting knife, small sharpening stone, water proof matches, candles, flint, stove in a can, gloves, signal mirror, wire for snares and other assorted uses, small spool of 20+ lb fishing line and a couple of small hooks in a small metal cigar can, tweezers, aspirin, a few meal replacement bars and a few other things I can't remember right now.

This may seem like a lot of stuff and work but with the proper preseason preparation and routine maintenance you will have many happy days on the river knowing that you are well prepared for most unexpected situations. You're careful preparation will also be appreciated by your friends who aren't as well prepared.

Lots of good stuff listed. I guess a guy just has to figure out the weak links in your own boat and plan accordingly. I like the cutting the socks story the best. I had to leave a good pair of socks behind in a greasy mess in Athens airport once. I feel for ya brother.
