Ok, I have a spare engine (350 SB Chevy) with aluminum heads, and the thread is now gone oout of the tapped hole that allows the screw that holds the exhaust in piston # 7.
I live in a third world country with no practical access to helicoils or thread repairing stuff.
Concrete question: What happens if I tap a 1/2" thread on that hole (original thread is 3/8") and put a stud?
Is that 1/2" hole too big? Will I reach the water system? _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |

cant you just order a helicoil set from usa? also there is a standard bolt size inbetween 3/8 and 1/2, i think its 7/16-14. no comment on wether it will interfere with water jackets.
ps if you would like help ordering a helicoil set i would be more than willing to order/resend it to you if you wish. |

Helicoil is the best option. If you have a credit card you should be able to buy off the 'net----

and get it shipped UPS / FedEx / postal service.
If not, as G-Force says let us know-we can buy you one and send it Postal Service International express service (like I did the Hot Boat magazine). Then you could snail mail us back the payment via money order or??
Then you just need to procure the correct drill bit, or we can get and send that for you also.
I can't hardly imagine trying to do anything with anything made from aluminum w/o Heli-coil help. I carry four different size kits with me to every race. _________________ "faster, Faster, FASTER until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of DEATH"#163 "Tuff-n'-Nuff" |

hmmm, Gary carries all the common heli-coil sizes with him, ok good, I'll just mark that down right here in the "where the parts are book" on the "H" page...... Awesome! I just completed an entry on every page! _________________ -Jesse |

Thanks for your help, but I already fixed the problem with the 7/16-14 stud, and it seems to be fine. I will let you know after the next race, which is in two weeks, how it managed.
I will probably bring some thread repairing stuff next time I travel to the U.S. _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |
