I've seen a couple of comments and requests, so here's the story:

Turns out that a can of Beer is lighter than water.

Day 6. Leg 9

The green flag comes down, and up we go, 18 miles from Whitecourt to Windfall Bridge.

Two minutes later, Estuardo, my driver, points out the Tachometer. The engine RPM’s are down, but his foot is stepping hard on the throttle. I turn around to see the engine (As if some loose connection, belt or cable will call out loud “Heeeree!!!! It’s me!!!”), but what I see is a lot of white-blue smoke, mainly water vapor and oil coming out from the valve cover breathers.

Not a good sign.

However, the main engine vital sign indicator, the oil pressure gauge, is holding on steady. As long as we have oil pressure, we can keep going. The smoke still comes out, hard enough to call the attention of the TV camera helicopter that turns around and follows our boat, morbidly taping the final moments of a dying engine.

About 500 meters shy from the finish line the engine makes the dreaded failed bearing noises (sound like marbles in a moving pouch) and stops.

Out come the paddles. We reach the shore in a few minutes and tie the boat to a tree. As we are going upstream, there is no way to get to the finish line.

“What do we do now?” asks Estuardo
“We’ll have to wait for a support boat to take us to the finish line”

Now we sit down and wait. I take a few steps and wonder what kind of animal left those big footprints in the sand. Mosquitoes realize it’s breakfast time and start attacking us.

Suddenly, I see four cans floating down the river coming in our direction. My first thought is that this is trash some punk dumped in the river (see 500 rafters thread) , but the cans are held together by the 6-pack plastic rings.

Estuardo leans over, and without any effort, picks them up. They’re full. New.

“We’re saved!!!”, he says

“But we’re stuck, and the engine broke down”, I reply

“But we have beer!!, and it’s COLD!!”

A few moments later, the support comes to pick us up and tow the boat to the finish line

“Hide those cans”, Estuardo says “No one is going to believe they came floating down the river.”

There is a God, after all…

Andreas,
Those beers delivered to you by the great Canadian river gods were indeed very special. The tree planters that were camped out at windfall were gracious enough to leave those beers at the finish line where they were put into the water to remain cool. As the boats started to come in, wave action sent them on their way bypassing another broken down boat to make it's way to you! If the river gods had allowed the beers to be discovered by the first boat, they wouldn't have made it to you as the navigator is a notorious beer hound!
You were the chosen ones!
