Well grizzly you got me stumped. I will see James tomorrow and look at your pics. and as far as getting your STUD loose Laughing the best way would be to turn it out from the inside , and kinda sounds like you've tried that well try drilling and an easy out and if that fails you can always drill a series of holes around the STUD and chisel it into one of the holes you created but keep in mind that's a last resort as you will need access to a welder to fill it all in and re-drill and tap. This also can melt or burn the UHMW so have plenty of wet rags handy!! where are you located???

Grizz, If you have a broken stud and have a steel welder you can weld a nut on the broken sud to back it out probably easier from the inside if the shoulder of the bolt is gone and it's easy to get to.

v-drive, I am in Dawson Creek BC. I have a mig so I am going to weld a nut onto the broken end inside the boat. All the rest came out easy with vise grips except a couple. I hope this does not continue or the R&D guys may have to scratch their heads a bit and figure it out for me.

Xero have you discussed and shown the pics of the bolts I sent to anyone for any thoughts?

hey Grizzly one of the main people I wanted to talk to was the guy who oversee's most of the installs. Since he's already showed up here( vdrive fanatic) I didn't email you about our talks.
I'm wondering if for some reason in those locations the bolts , as has been mentioned, are actually "too hard". We're looking for a lower grade bolt for you that may handle a bit of flex better. No one here has come up with any solid reasoning for this, we haven't seen this issue before. The odd broken bolt occurs but in almost 100% of the cases it is due to either fatigue or a direct strike situation. Its just something that goes with UHMW and hitting the bottom of the river here and there.
It would seem to me something is moving to put enough stress on those bolts to have them fracture.
Low grade allen head countersunk bolts are tricky to find but we are working on it. We have experimented with stainless in the past but due to the bolts galling this proved very unsatisfactory.
Replace with the lowest grade you can find and we'll let you know if we can locate a better substitute.

Cheers
