Does anyone run one on their boats. If so did you go with the thru-hull, transom mount or should a guy just go with the portable so I can take it off when I am not going to be using it. Let me know what you have done and how it works for you. I'll be using it primarily for walleye on lakes and sturgeon on the Fraser.
I just don't want to be ripping off the transducer every time I hit the skinny water. |

Hi Mountain man,
I use the Lowrance Eagle (Fishstrike 2000) 7" screen
Complete with GPS and chart plotting. It is a great unit IMO.
Transducer is mounted at the transom (even with the bottom of the boat.
When launching I flip it up out of the way then back down once in the water.
If I get into skinny water it just flips itself up.
I'm very happy with the performance.
Price is around $1000. for this unit.
Cheers,

I run the Garmin 178C and faced the same dilemma with mounting the transducer as a regular function of my transportation is....Skinny
I finally mounted the transducer in the typical position on a bracket. The transducer swivel bolt is kept slightly loose to allow the unit to swivel up in case of contact. The biggest problem I can see is if the boat is drifting backwards and contacts........then the thing would be toast .
So far so good, and there has definitely been some bottom contact . _________________ 17' Firefish Frenzy, 200 opti, 8 degree rock chewin' bottom. Fishin' Extreme

Ok guys new problem now with this fish finder ordeal.
My boat has the HD trim tabs that run the entire width of the boat. I have no clear shot to the water except off the trim tabs and I don't think that would be a good spot.
Any ideas. My best thought was to have a piece made up to bolt onto the pump guard or the trim tab to mount the transducer on.
Help me out with this one please. |

I chose to build a bracket that bolts to the back of the trim tab. So far it seems to work good, just keep the transducer mount sort of loose enough that it will flip up the transducer just in case you forget to flip it up in skinny water.
The only tragedy would be if you wack something when drifting backwards; that would probably mash it...permanently .
Try this post too, they're plotting something similar.

Thanks Skinnydipper.
Now did you actually cut a hole in the hull to put the wire through or just run it over the side. Dam I hate ugly looking things like that!! |

Mountainman:
In the gps/finder package was a through hull type fitting that I installed just below the swim grid and siliconed to prevent any seepage.
If it weren't so darn snowy outside I'd go and take a picture for you
OK....OK.....I pryed myself away from the computer, put the snow boots on, and braved the snow.........just for you .

Thanks again Skinny I think I will look for a heavy rubber grommet type piece I can run the wire through and use some marine calking to seal it up. Now to find a piece of aluminum to use for the bracket and get it attached to the trim tab. |
