I'm having a hard time with the life jacket rule. Would anybody like to clear that up. What do you need. Are full suits like BLOWN INCOME had for sale a while back what I would need or????????????????

Not necessarily a full suit (those are called capsule suits and in the US if you use one you also have to have a neck roll and a 5 point harness) but here are the UIM regs

205.06 - LIFE JACKET
Each person aboard a race boat must wear an efficient life jacket during
the race and practice conforming with the following rules :
The efficiency of a life jacket is the sole responsibility of the wearer who
must be assured that it conforms with the U.I.M. rules and carries
indelible confirmation of this;
Race organisers are required to repeat this important clause in race
instructions and in the advance-programme;
This compulsory regulation is for all international races and
recommended for national ones. In any case, life jackets must be in
conformity with following rule;
Buoyancy : a life jacket must have a minimum of 7,5 kg solid buoyancy
for a person weighing up to 60 kg and 9 kg solid buoyancy for those
over 60 kg (closed cells foam only);
The disposition of the solid buoyancy must be such as to ensure that an
unconscious person shall float face up in the water;
All adjustable straps must be at least 40 mm wide and have a minimum
breaking strain of 1000 kg. The crotch straps must be attached at the
front at the position of iliac crest and at the back in the sacral region. A
recovering attachment must be placed either on the shoulders, or as a
chest strap and made with strap of the same quality as indicated above;
Manufactured from fire resistant material and coloured orange;
The back must include a protective plate;
The compulsory collar must have rounded edges and extend above the
bottom of the helmet. It must not exceed 180 degrees;
A racing life jacket manufacturer must undertake to comply with the
rules and print indelibly on the life jacket the following : “conforms with
the regulation for a person weighing a maximum of 60 kg” or “for a
person weighing over 60 kg”, in respect of the buoyancy.

In the US here is the regs as set forth from the APBA

Life Jackets:
All racing life jackets must be constructed in compliance with the "APBA Life Jacket Basic Manufacturing Specifications" dated April 8, 1991. Copies are available from APBA National Headquarters.
All racing life jackets must have a permanent affixed (sewn in) manufacturer’s label that includes:
The date of manufacture of the date of recertification
The manufacturer’s or recertifier’s company name
The type category (A, A-100, B)
"A" For use in an open and unrestrained cockpit. Maximum boat speed is less than 100 mph.

"A-100" For use in an open and unrestrained cockpit. Maximum boat speed is 100 mph or greater. A-100 may also be sued where A is required.

"B" For use in a driver restrained cockpit not necessarily employing
supplemental life support equipment needing life jacket accommodations.

Color Requirements: All life jackets shall have at least 70% of the upper surfaces above the waist, both front and back, international orange or yellow in color.
Every driver shall demonstrate that his life jacket will function properly when requested by the referee.

Now with all that being said.....These are fairly high dollar units and not real comfortable. The idea being that the jacket would help you withstand a high speed impact, provide some protection to your back and neck and float you and not be torn off in the event of an impact.

Here are some links to go look at

www.lifelinejackets.com

Look around-Standard and capsule are the most common, Offshore maybe an option but the long "tail" isn't really designed to sit in a seat.

http://www.securityrace.com/lifejackets/jacketpricing.html

unfortunately they don't do pictures.

Torso Inboard Life Jacket, Standard Inboard both have all the features the UIM would like to see.

Look at the order form also

http://www.securityrace.com/images/LifJkt.pdf

A personal preference, I like leg bands better than crotch straps, they are both designed to keep you from being peeled out of the jacket in a high speed water entry.

And to reiterate----Race life jackets are not designed with comfort in mind. A crew needs to practice with FULL safety regalia. Helmets, fire resistant clothes and Race Life Jacket. It is whole different deal with all the gear on.

Seems that the color red is very common for race life jackets and especially for torso suits. But red isn't listed by UIM or the APBA as an accepted color, (yellow & orange only) and yet red passes tech inspection in the US and Canada?

Gary or anyone care to comment.

I can take a crack at it. What I had posted were just the APBA regulations. They were a little more specific so as to show more construction "detail". As massive as the post already was I should have included the AWJA part also, but thought it was already getting a little "long in the tooth" Embarassed Each organization that APBA sanctions is allowed some leeway in their own rulemaking. ( Kind of like the "Advance Program" concept). We have to submit our rules to APBA for their approval and then are "allowed" to use them once approved. So they have allowed us to also have red. There are only a couple of guys that use actual red. By far and away most (I'm thinkin' 90%) use the International Orange.

The AWJA "modifier"....

g. Life Jackets & Helmets: Racing-style life jackets (equal to or better thanLifeline or Security) for all crew members in each boat class must be APBA approved. Life jackets must be bright red,bright yellow or bright orange, other colors will not be allowed. (also APBA GENERAL SAFETY RULES #3 parts A & B
1. Racing crews choosing to use "capsule jacket" style life jacket, must wear a 5 point harness and neck roll
2. All life jackets must be in like-new condition – no rips, tears, burns, etc.

That one I don't know..... Very Happy I think it has something to do with Canadians being more fun loving and maybe less litiginous? They maybe don't get as "hung up" with the minutiae and just want folks to participate and smile a lot??

On a more serious note.......just put it in the ADVANCE PROGRAM ?

Thanks Gary. Explains the US rule. I think somewhere in our Canadian rules archives there is likely a similar allowance for red.

But maybe we should have a smiling rule, in our advance program. Very Happy
