Stoker,

I stepped up and purchased a 30ft double axle enclosed trailer last year. I got the bumper pull instead of the gooseneck trailer because I wanted to be able to use the canopy top on my truck to be able to haul more stuff when traveling. There are lots of things to consider when using one of these trailers. How big does it need to be? How heavy will it be when loaded. At the race site will I be able to park it? How will I load it and secure the boat from the inside? etc......

After purchasing the trailer I designed and built a dolly trailer so it will fit inside the wheel wells of the enclosed trailer. I also built the dolly trailer so it has a telescoping tongue to reduce the amount of space. This also accomodates a 19ft boat or a 21ft one. I also fabricated a stand that bolts to the frame of the big trailer's floor. This stand has a 2" ball mounted to secure the trailer and also has an electric winch stand and a mechanical winch (in case the electric winch quits). This mechanical winch is the same that goes on the front of a regular boat trailer (hand crank type) but with a longer strap.

I also equipped my trailer with a work bench in front, a fold down bed, and places for my tool boxes to be secured while traveling. With the 30 ft trailer I have enough room to carry a spare engine in front of the boat. I put it on a piano type dolly with four wheels. I also carry a fold up cherry picker in case I need to swap motors somewhere. The set up really turned out well but it was a lot of work. I did all the work myself (friends included) and was not that expensive to build. With the cost of the trailer ($9k) and the dolly trailer ($2k worth of materials) and all the other lumber I have probably $12k worth of goodies in it. It is not fancy by any means, but it has everything I need to feel like I have a shop on wheels.

I purchased it local from Redwood Marine out of Eureka, CA. It was built at Forest River, INC out of Dalles, Oregon. It has worked great for me and allows me to travel without worrying about sabatoge, theft, or dirtying up the boat due to road grime. It also allows for a nice place to relax at races and to stay out of the weather if it is raining. To me it was well worth the investment. My two cents.....or maybe three....
