Here are a few things that we found handy to have done to make a smooth trip

Order Pesos at the bank before you go...this helps as the gas stations/toll roads in Mexico and at the boarder ...looking for a bank or ATM as soon as you cross the boarder might be difficult ( having cash on hand may also help out in other situations also )ordering at the bank takes about a week to get the pesos in $1500.00-$2000.00 Cad is a good start.

Have all your paper work for your truck, boat and boat trailer under one persons name. this includes insurance/registration/Bill of sales for the boat/certificate of origin for the boat and trailer (save's unnecessary delays of trying to get everything changed over the phone while sitting at the boarder)

Get Mexican insurance !! (this is mandatory for Mexico and will save you time at the boarder if you do it before you go) We used San Xavier Mexico Insurance toll free 1-888-327-1255 this is around $400.00CAD and can be done quickly with one call....note...have all your Serial #'s in front of you when you call (truck/boat & trailer) they can fax the policy to you.

Make an extra copy (or 2)of all your paperwork as they might ask for copy's of them to keep at the boarder (a copy of your passport might prove to be handy also)

Depending who you travel with..we keep a cooler in the back seat of the truck with snacks/refreshments/bread/mayo/sand meat (no beef to cross into US)etc...as the only stops that seem to be made are gas/washroom breaks...the gas stations in Mexico do not carry much for food most of the time...therefore the navigator is the sandwich maker

Maps... a must...a GPS will help with some of the tricky areas

Book your rooms for the race ....Perhaps Wilson could post a few of the hotel names in Altimirano etc.....also it looks as like there might be a night of camping...always fun !! So a cot and sleeping bag are also a good idea

If traveling with a group we found it handy to have a set of radios to keep in contact with the others...cell coverage is not always great

I can't think of anything else...any other ideas anyone?

Bring a good liver....you will do some damage so you might want to go easy for the next few weeks...or go hard and practice up...whatever method works for you !!! Cheers and be ready to have a great time !! Smile

Are you coming down this time, Coyotita???

This is the Hotel list in Altamirano with phone numbers:

Hotel Cortijo de León 01 767 6 72 10 45
Hotel New York 01 767 6 72 78 66
Hotel del Valle 01 767 6 72 15 17
Hotel Real de la Loma: 01 767 6 72 14 38 or 6 75 02 66
Hotel Bugambilias: 01 767 6 72 29

Chances are no one in these places will speak English, anyway.

If traveling long hauls of highway in Mexico, it's a good idea to carry some 10 gallons of truck fuel on board. Gas stations are not so conveniently located.

Oh, I forgot you Canadians are civilized and use the metric system, so make it 40 liters. Cool

I can PM my mobile phone in case you need assistance.

A couple of more that comes to my mind. Man I wish I was going.
1 - Handi-wipes to sooth the crack.
2 - Candies for the little kids at Caracol.
3 - Any kids clothes or small toys that you have room for.
4 - Ant-acid tablets.
5 - Lots of money for beer, rum and any thing extra.
6 - open mind and short memory.
7 - Don't forget respect for the locals.

Good luck to all the racers and crews.
Drive safe.

Just reading the forums and I gotta say, really a good job on the tips guys (and gal)- if I was going I would certainly print this out and tape it to my dashboard!
And who says the Canadians are civilized? They combined golf and football and they play it on ice! Wink

"Wipes to sooth the crack" HA HA HA HA HA HA Laughing

It just occurred to me that a copy of the Spanish invitation to the race might be handy for answering the sort of "what is the purpose of your trip" questions. If you need one, PM me and I will e-mail it over.

HI EVERYBODY, IT WILL BE BETTER IF YOU GUYS GO ALL TOGETHER, THE ROAD FROM TOLUCA TO ALTAMIRANO OR MORELIA TO ALTAMIRANO ARE LITTLE DANGER AND BAD, SO IF YOU ARRIVED LATE TO THAT TWO CITIES STAY THERE AND RETURN TO THE HWY NEXT DAY IN THE MORNING.
OK ANOTHER THING IF YOU FUEL YOUR TANKS AT TOLUCA, YOU DON'T HAVE PROBLEM TO ARRIVE ALTAMIRANO, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF GAS STATIONS ALSO.
HERE ARE TWO MAPS, ONE FROM TOLUCA ANOTHER FROM MORELIA, IF YOU NEED SOME INFO TO CROSS THE CITY OF TOLUCA LET ME KNOW AND I EXPLAIN TO YOU.
