Yup we have seen a few s.s wear rings with some issues but only the one that actually turned. We have never had a uhmw wear ring that we have done turn. I have seen one wear ring damaged but not beyond use. They had got a stick stuck in the impeller and they tried fro about a hour to work it out while driving. It would still get up on step but not to well. They finally beached the boat and took it apart to get the stick out and there was a groove cut in the wear ring. That was last year and he is still running it and according to him it still works pretty much as good as it was when it was new. So this guy has about 150 hrs on his wear ring through silty, stick ridden water and has taken his fair share of gravel bars. What we have seen with s.s is that you would have had to redo the sleeve or impeller twice in that much time in order to keep 75% of the performance that you get with the uhmw wear ring. So the math does work but more in favour of the uhmw wear ring. If you talk to anyone with an outboard jet they will tell you that a uhmw wear ring is the only way to go. All of the comments made hear are our experienced opinion and Firefish is more than welcome to have his. He may have tried some sort of plastic wear ring before that had other issues but it is more than just slamming some plastic into a housing. We can check with some of the guys that we have sold them to and see if they would be ok with having there info listed here if that would help. I meen come on it is just a wear ring, guys are spending $1100.00 on new high scew impellers that tend to trap rocks in them just because they have better holshot. What we have is better all around.

In the OBJ application what does it improve. I just put a new al one in this spring and may have went with umhw if I knew they were available.
Is it an off the shelf item or do you need imp to size it. I use a 3 blade al or the 4 blade SS, both are 7 3/8 D. Would I be able to swap imp and just shim like normal. Are all the mounting holes the exact same and how does the umhw take to the torque specs of the standard liner.
Basic questions but the forum is slow

Hey Vince, you should asked me at the races. If we get both impellers we would make them both the same size then you could interchange. We find that pretty much all of the impellers are not round so we usually have to take a small cut to true them up. The only difference when installing it is that you have to be very even when tightning the bolts because of the tight tolerance. Basically the benefits are a big difference in out of the hole performance and way better cornering. To lesser degree you get better fuel economy and faster cruise speed along with slightly quieter operation. The biggest one seems to be in life span. If you still have the old housing you could do that one or I could buy the old housing from you. Hey aren't you supposed to be pouring through endless tapes of boat racing.

Whoops! Sorry Vince I just read your post again maybe I drank to much last night. All of the improvements are the same and you can just bolt it in and shim it to a zero fit(just so that the starter has a little trouble cranking it over. Or you can just snug the bolts lightly start it up and tighten them while it idles. It seems to find its centre that way. I have a merc on my muskrat and I can hammer the throttle at about 3 mph and it won't even spin it out.

Endless tapes is right. We collected almost 100 tapes of straight racing this summer. 20 from GP(you need to go to a 2 day event) 35 from peace and another 35 from WC + some additional footage from other people. After we get all 3 DVDs look out for a 2006 Canadian Championship DVD because it will be a double DVD package, over 3 hours and in HD widescreen(maybe as I don't have an HD TV, but the GP DVD looks wicked on my brothers HD TV..properly encrypted so people can't burn them and give them out at will.
Your roll bar footage is on the way...your going to like it. The last leg was pretty cool!
I don't know if you would want my old liner as it is trashed. I keep it in the boat for a spare, but it is shot. I'll have the boat put away in a couple months and will send you down my new 3 blade to size up for a UMHW liner...I'll be the arctic tester for you! We'll see how it runs at -20c when the water is at .2C right before freeze up

Cool Vince, if your outboard jet impeller is new or even close you will not need to send it. Is your liner right now the bolt in style with a flange on it? If not you will need to change your shoe to make it one. I know the plastic shrinks a little when it is cold but it will be neat to see what happens. As for a two day event it would be awesome but I am not sure the support boat guys could take it. Half of them were sunburnt after one day and the other half couldn't walk by 9:00 pm. Are biggest trouble is a volunteer base, everyone is so busy all the time that they cannot donate very much to it. Brian Megregor is so flippin busy and he is the guy who knows it all and gets things moving. Having said that we are sure going to try and make it a two day event. I just talked to Jesse and it turns out he navigated for Greg Boise in Oregon last weekend at Albany. They came in second in the fx class. He said it was hot and guys were great but the river was not to challenging.

Not sure if I want to change the shoe as it has the intake kit welded on. I think mine is just the old style tapered wear ring, the imp are both new this summer.

you can modify your shoe by just cutting off the shoulder that steps up into the pump housing. You just won't be able to go back to the none shouldered wear ring again[/img]

Ya there has been a couple of time when if we were not strapped in so tight that that would have happened.

is the uhmw wear ring patented or patent pending;pls advise patent #;the concept of uhmw wear rings was tried in 1997 when the sport jet first came out but there were problems with fine shreds of plastic plugging the cooling system when sharp gravel was pumped;if you stay in deep water you would be ok

Yes the uhmw wear ring is patented it went thru 3 years of courts and lawyers and there was 3 companies that tried over and over to stop the patent but the patent office gave me a patent on this product and since then 2 of the companies have since stopped trying to copy my design as it would now be a patent infringement on them my Lawyers are now getting ready to go after the last company as they have tried to copy my wear rings
I have been asked many times if this product is patented or not I really wonder why that is so
I say again YES it is or I would not be selling this product to anyone
I have never ever heard of little strands of plastic plugging off the water holes as mentioned before
check out to where the impeller runs in the housing and you will see that it could never do that and to ever one that runs a river that has silt or sand in it you better be running a water filter or you will pay one day because sand will not wash out of a motor very well and you will get hot spots in you engine and it will over heat on you and quite its as simple as that and with a water filter you can just unscrew the filter wash it out and go again
