Confused Hi People, A big thank you for previous replies to my annoying questions. here's another please!

I'm running my boat at 25-2700 rpm which turns the pump around 35 give or take with my overdrive. My neighbor, runs his 19/ft boat with the same engine 460 big block @ 49.

Question= what rpm can I run the 12JC safely before it detonates (well before Rolling Eyes ) If this is a dumb question, don't read it Laughing

Thanks all!
Emery

it can probably run faster than anything your 460 can rotate at

As a thumb rule, I would say that 5000 RPM is a "safe" limit. I have seen jet units that can race continuously at 6000 RPM rather safely.

I have no technical support whatsoever for the above figures. This is what some would call an "educated guess".

Most pleasure boats I've ridden in don't do more that 4000-4500 RPM's anyway.

Yes I'm sure those numbers are fair and 5K or less should be ultra safe, upwards of that you'd probably want to start making sure everything is in top shape but should spin to 6K easily. I believe most racers are around this rpm, a rare few running upwards of 7K
I'm spinning mine at 5000 with a 460 with no issues

Cheers

I had a blown gas boat that I turned an aggressor "A" 6800, but I was always afraid of running an aluminum impeller.
I have run an aluminum up to 7200 rpm's but for short times when testing.
Someone told me one time that a Jet pump becomes inefficient at about 6500 rpm, but I never proved that theory or remember who told me that.

my $ .02

Hey Guys,
That's top notch information and I stand educated Wink

I was worried about disintegrating the pump if I ran the 460 up to around 35-38. And now, not worried anymore Cool (well all most not)

Thanks and Cheers to all, this is a great site!!

Religious Lubing=Long pump life. Make it a habit. Periodically check the bearing housing for heat. Especially after an extended run or a hot pass. If it is uncomfortable to touch, there's trouble brewin'. Expensive trouble Shocked Crying or Very sad

I have raced at 7200 rpm consistently. That's with a SS impeller, my aluminum would only last minutes at that rpm and horse power.
