The new racer might know his home waters but other courses maybe totally new until race day. Now nothing replaces experience gained in prerunning but we all use little bits of technology to help us in our busy lives. OK so here's the pitch.
Vince, your crew will gather many many hours of tape at this years races, cut it into hundreds of tracks and splice it all together to create some of the best entertainment one can stuff into a DVD but there may be a second market. What if you run a camera on a chase helicopter, filming nothing but the course over the entire length, no boats, but no edits start to finish. Flying high enough to see both banks and a forward view of the river. Now you have a "come to life map of the course".
You could add to this your GPS data that you get, maybe some map data, shots of the launch, the access roads, the local accommodation's, boat dealers, campgrounds, (advertising $?)...and so on.

Eventually have a set of DVDs which are like a road atlas for the race courses. I would buy it if it existed today. What about the 2007 worlds, should be some interest from the other countries in getting some of this information in advance. Maybe this would get more boats out to each others races.

Anyhow, what do people think.

You can check out the rivers with Google Earth. In some areas you can even see depth of the river. If you haven't seen this program just do a Internet search under "google earth" and try it free. it's a really cool satellite map.

Google Earth I am still unimpressed after buying the advanced most of the areas around Chicago you can only get 3600 ft anything below that
it becomes blurry.

Could be a useful tool, but it has some limitations though. Depending on the specific river of course, but where you have a very active river, the channels move quite substantially, year to year and even over the course of one year as water levels change and fluctuate.

A a general overview of a route at a given time ..sure it would be useful, but I would be leery of relying on it to much.

What about split screen with roll bar cam view of entire course and air shot as well.
I've been focusing on narration and editing. Getting questions and such for interviews. Stealing ideas from the Dakkar Rally as that is one of my fav races to watch.
