Is there any other engine options besides merc like yami ect. Even with the fourstroke technology of the outboards now. I would like a shallow water boat but after reading the countless post on the merc sport jet issues I would never buy a boat with one. |

Not sure what issues you've read about, but I've had 3 sport jet boats and love them. Current one has 550 hrs on it with no issues. |

The only problem I have really ever read about SportJet 200's is the fuel lift pump. And it's a 5 minute fix. Some of the older SportJets like the 240 were problematic, but you can't buy them anymore. All the new ones are 200's and a very reliable. Impellers are cheap, the boat will be light, etc. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again, as they make for great fun. Try landing your small block boat on a mud bar and see how fun that is, lol. |

Yes i had a small block a few years ago and it is no fun when stuck on a sand bar, I guess i dont no enough about these sport jets compared to a V8 i just though someone out there might be experimenting with a 4 stroke powerhead option |

There are some four stroke equivalent to the sport jet, Yamaha has a 140 horse (forgot the name of this one) option that was poorly received, the ecotec and supercharged ecotec, the 4.3 litre Kodiak...
None of these really compete with the weight, power, reliability, and efficiency of the sportjet. I wouldn't hesitate to get a sportjet in any small to midsize shallow water boat. Any engine is going to have some issues along the way. |

Fire fish's website used to have a long thread about a small car engine Ecotech? i think and it seemed that they really couldnt match the performance of the sport jet but i think they were happy with the fuel use. cost was higher as well. |
