Hey All,
The Whitecourt Riverboat Association has been volunteering for this event for 5 years now, and we are looking for someone to help us out or pass the torch to, this event is nothing less than incredible, its a North Face sponsored International Race, the course is 125 Km over mountains, through muskeg, creeks and bush, and they only have 24 hrs. to complete it. Our involvement includes setting up at Hells Gate at the park Boundary on the Smokey River about 15 min by boat up from the highway bridge on HWY 40 north of Grande Cache, we have to be set-up and ready for the first runners at about 6:00pm (varies a bit depending on weather) and we ferry the runners across the river until 6:00am. Included in volunteer Package for us, is free tickets to the Death Fest Concert on the following Sunday, there is some funding available for fuel, generally 2 boats are required, but past experience says 3 would be nice, then someone can always be trying to get a bit of sleep. There is camping in town or you can stay on the river at Hells Gate.
This race always takes place the long weekend in August, so this year we will be there Friday night ( Aug 1) for the volunteer meeting at 5 o'clock (mandatory).
We have 2 boats lined up for this year, but it would be nice if someone was interested in doing this in years to come, to come this year and see how it's done and have some fun
Check it out, search, The Great Canadian Death Race
