I'll be getting some health/travel insurance for my trip to Riggins but was wondering what if anything can be done to cover you for the race itself? Im guessing most regular policy's will exclude coverage for racing down a rocky river at breakneck speeds LOL
What do you guys do?

I'm not totally sure how it all works out, but we have at least some coverage, while racing, by being members of the APBA. I know there is an AD&D provision and I THINK there is also some kind of coverage for injury. (We at least have some EMT's that can put a splint on........)

Just how crazy do you plan on being?????? Laughing

I don't know how it works for sure, but I think there is a reciprocal agreement with the Canadian UIM governing body that you do not have to be a member of APBA to race in a US event, but if you aren't already a member of the Canadian organization, you will be required to be an APBA member for sure and at any rate you also have to become an AWJA member also to be afforded the liability protections of the event policy.

Just covering the basis Gary we have a little different healthcare systems up here as you know.
Im not planning on being too crazy...............I won't be driving the boat LOL(if I was ummm..hehe)
I did join the APBA last week but didn't know I'd have to also join the AWJA????? I had not read that anywhere, please elabourate if I have misunderstood you.
Im also curious as to how the SJ will handle all this big water. Are there many people in that area that have them for pleasure use etc?

Yes, you have to be a "member" of the organization that is the recognized group that is acknowledged by the APBA (that would be the AWJA). Seems like it is less than $50. The Salmon River Jetboat Race Association requires it as part of the requirements of being a sanctioned part of the AWJA US Championship series.

I am unsure about how the SJ will handle the "big"water. However, the RLS Marine guys were there last year with a SJ175 "sled" type boat that they ran through everything about 50 times. Used it as one of the main pre-run boats. The SJ's also have more line options. I think I read somewhere where Rob Chrunyk stated that he did not think there was a safer boat to run through the rough stuff than a 16' SJ sport boat. Our "Family Fishin' Boat" is only an 18 foot hull and it handles everything just fine. It is a 60 mph range type of boat. I can't imagine the SJ's being at any kind of disadvantage safety wise.

No none in the close area running SJ type boats. There really aren't many open type jetboats in Idaho at all. Everybody's concept of a jetboat here is something that is fully enclosed with air ride seats and a heater. 23' or longer that you can get out of the weather when you are fishing. There are a few SJ type boats in the Lewiston area I believe.

Rapids with names-Coming upriver from Lightning Creek
Lightning-Cherry Creek, Tight Squeeze, Time Zone, Race Creek (not really a rapid per se, but some big green water and good chop), then a really tight S turn with some rocks as you come into the Town Hole. The 2 features here are called Glass Wave and 911 Rock. High speed run through the Town Hole. Small tricky rapid-Preachers Rock and Salmon Rapids on the top on the Town Hole. Another S curve (fairly tight) at the confluence of the Main and Little Salmon with a small cataract named Mill Wave. Then shallow with rocks through sweeping turns. Right by Short's Bar (where we will be launching and the main pits). Some more no name chop and rollers here and there but mostly flat out to Island bar. There is always some rolly and green water depending on flow levels. This will be a lot like the Trinity except "larger". We are in a deep, steep canyon. Lots of rock.

Going Downriver from the start at….
Island Bar: Long flat spot on river east side. It's an island during really high flows. Capable of launching boats here. Not a concrete ramp. Just back down the river rock.
Goose Poop Beach: Mile 0.5. Lots of geese hang out here after eating sometimes, hence the name.
Shorts Bar: Mile 2.5. This is our launch / pit area. Nice calm stretch down to---
Mill Wave(II): Mile 3. The rapids start here with a splash through these waves.
Salmon Rapids (II): Located at the confluence of the Little Salmon River. Splash through the waves, but stay off the cliff on the right!
Preachers Rock(II-III): Stay out of the hole!
Riggins: The city boat ramp is here.
911 Rock (II): Named after it was featured on the TV show "Rescue 911" several years ago. Also called "Go Left, Go Right or You're Fired".
Glass Wave (II): Mile 5. Big Waves at lower flows.
Race Creek (II-III): At higher flows you better be good or go around this bad boy!
Time Zone (III-IV): There's rocks on the right. This is one of the better known rapids on the river. High use photo area. Rafters have lots of out of boat experiences here!
Tight Squeeze (II-III): Mile 6. Narrow, one big tongue rapid. Lots of rollers on top end.
Cherry Creek (II): Mile 8.5
Lightning Creek: Mile 9. Finish area. Don’t get into Chair Creek Rapid!!

Gary Im leaving Toronto fri nite to head to Marks place in MI and I assume we'll split Sat am. We want to find someplace(s) along the way somewhere to run a bit as we'd like a little practice. Lets face it last time I was in Marks boat(actually the only time I was ) we were either tearing thru a swamp almost hitting deer Shocked "charging" the winch battery or towing my recovered tunnel thru a swamp in the pitch black. I think those are a far cry from what we're going to do in riggins (I HOPE!) lol

The more info I get the more excited I get, bring it on!
