G man, I have only seen it done with a wrench we sell and a couple of quick raps with a mallet.

I used a straight pry bar thru the U-joint to stop the motor from turning and a pipe wrench with a rag on the impeller nut. Worked great. Since I am exposing myself to ridicule already, I might as well confess that I removed and replaced the bowl cap by using a very large file like a screwdriver, and turned it with a Crescent wrench. Necessity is the mother of invention. . . .

Hell Man, Try the impact, its the fastest..... Rolling Eyes

If that don't work, go with the Breaker Bar. Stick something in the U joint on the front of the pump.

You can usually get a bar through the u-joint to use as a "stop" to keep the shaft from turning. Brace the end against the bottom or ???Have been known to use an impact wrench when I am by a compressor......in the field we use an old beam type torque wrench.

However, we have the impeller in and out quite a bit, consequently it is easier. If yours has been on the shaft for a long time the galvanic corrosion factor is pretty high. Hose it with WD-40 and let it set overnight. On re-install use use a liberal amount of silver anti-seize on the shaft, inside the impeller bore and on the threads/nut. If you don't get anti-seize all over your hands, on your nose and in your hair you probably don't have enough on Very Happy
