whoa i think you may have found it, timing ? I have always set mine between 8 to 10 * advanced at idle 800-900 rpm, with the vaccumm advance removed from the distributor and plugged off. Or as i haven't tried yet, leave the vaccumm on the distributor and look for full advace of 28* to 32* at 4000 rpm. That would be where i would start , to much advace or retard would cause lots of heat as well, ive discloured a set of ceramic headers with too much advance ! Also you could check the plugs after to ensure its not lean. _________________ "I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" I looked and there before me was a pale horse! going to do the timing like you said 8-10 degrees at 8-900 rpm, and will check it at 4000 rpms, thanks for that info!!! _________________ 2005 spirit harbercraft 2175 ZZ383 - Kodiak 3 Stage pump |

Set the timing at 10 degrees 1000 rpms, richened up the carb, engine now runs at 160 at idle and 180 at 4400 rpms. idles great, runs great, lots of power! I have a Edlebrock 650 and haven't had any problems so far with it.
now just need to take it out and break in the engine, also no problems with the 3 stage pump, jumps on step in no time, not sure how much faster the boat is yet but will gps it sometime tomorrow. Thanks to all you guys for the great info and advice its all appreciated very much!
