1998 Eagle, Alberta Special, 19', 12 degree bottom, 1/4" keel, 3/16 bow, center fuel tank, Rear padded seat, 4.3L V-6, Berkley Jet, dual bus heaters, Travel tarp, camper top full to the back, 230 hrs. Single axel river run trailer.

Exellent running condition, can get up on step with 6 adults no problem, runs at 4100 rpm with a A impeller. 50 mph on gps going downstream on Peace River. Tarps built by Wilimine in Sexmith two years ago. Also comes with fish finder and mounted gps.

Would this make a good beginner boat? What brand of engine? Also, if any experts read this, is it possible to modify the boat to accept a small block chevy engine?

Excellent beginer boat, the 4.3L is a small block Chevy. Only diffrence is they hacked off the front two cylinders, so all the accesories and motor mounts will work, except for water cooled manifolds. The motor is quite a bit shorter so depending how far back the seat is you may or may not have room.

A couple budies have told me that the Berkley jets are not very forgiving for hitting gravel or sticks, is that true, or are they over exagerating? How about the 12 degree bottom, is that ok for shallow water, or is this more of a deeper water boat? I kind of thought that i could get into a cheaper boat sooner, then maybe spend some money on it a year or two down the road to improve it.

Thoughts?

95% of all jet boats I have seen and worked on have been mixed flow pumps ( Berkeley, American Turbine, Dominator, legend ect ) and they work very well and are less expensive to repair. Axial flow pumps also work very well and will take a little bit larger gravel and sticks through them with minor wear and damage, axial pumps have a better off the line performance but mixed flow have better top end performance. There is a rock grate on the intake side of both these pumps that needs to be kept clean. Axial pumps like Hamiltons and Scott's can run bigger debris through them without damaging it too badly, both will cost you $$$ if you keep putting gravel through them. My buddy has this exact boat in Peace River with a 350Chevy and it runs shallow water all day long with no problems.

Thanks TD. When you say he runs shallow water, does that include the accidental skipping of the odd sand and gravel areas that turn out to be too shallow? Again, as a complete beginner, I am sure to get it stuck on more than one occasion.

Regarding upgrades, I was hoping that I could evenetually take the boat back to Outlaw or someone and have a V8 put into the boat. I am a licenced mechanic, and can rebuild a small block Chevy in my sleep, and am sure I have a cabinet full of parts left over from my LT1 race car. I also have a bunch of BBC parts kicking around as well I think.........
I understand that there may be some structural work, but knowing a V6 and a V8 are very similar, I was hoping it would only be a matter of moving the rear seat forward? What about the center fuel tank, is that good or bad? Is that something that can be modified, or is there any need to ?

I traded the boat in and I think it might be for sale at outlaw in Red Deer if your are still interested. Putting a sbc in this boat would be fairly easy because the back seat was added by the previousl owner and is bolted in along the sides. The bell housing should match up to a small block, just have to move the back seat forward 4-5 ".
