Hello from Riggins!!
Actually we are still in Mississippi. Work has kept us here for the last four months.
Moving on to our race. Permits will soon be applied for, and we will be well on our way to race weekend.
Our race always falls on the third weekend in April. This year our weekend happens to fall on Easter Weekend. We hope that this will not hinder our boat count. Please give us your input.
Just as last year, The local Riggins area businesses will be providing a $200.00 individual boat sponsorship. Pre-entered boats will be eligible for the $200.00, which in turn allows that business to post a small advertisement on your race boat. This turned out to be a great hit for the local businesses, and hope the racers felt the same way. Please keep in mind that this is on a first come first serve basis. If there are more sponsors than racers, then the racers that have entered first will be eligible for an extra sponsor.
We are also allotting funds towards leg money. We were excited to see that alot of the racer cashed their leg money checks to help with the trip home. Being a former racer, I have shoe stringed home with this money, and know how much just a little bit can help.
We were excited about our race last year. I would have never expected such great success, especially with a different venue. We are committed to a bigger and better event this year!!!

The Riggins Race Committee wishes to announce that $200 (USD) Local Sponsorships are now available !!
First registered=First sponsored.
Need your name, boat number and class, your personal contact info, (address, phone, e-mail) and entry / registration fee. Entry fees for this years race are posted at bottom of this page. (Remember ALL entry fees collected will be presented to a local community / charitable organization.)
With the exception of SportJet where entry will be returned to purse money.

You are then assigned a local sponsor. At Tech-In / Boat Show the sponsor will provide 2 decals / stickers (approx 2 square feet) that you will need to attach to your boat (you may remove them after the event if you wish- I am sure they would appreciate you taking their name everywhere else, but that is up to you) and hand you your $200. If there are more sponsors than boats, then first registered get MORE sponsors. For example…..if there are 20 sponsors and 15 boats then the first 5 boats registered (and paid) get 2 local sponsors and $400. (You must actually show up and be capable of starting a leg.) You don’t have to pre-register but your chance to get a sponsor is better. (If there are 15 sponsors and 20 boats, the last 5 to register DON’T get a local sponsor). Your chance to get more sponsorship is much better.
Boats that had sponsors last year will be able to keep the same sponsor for this year. This will make every boat the “town” boat with folks pulling for you. We would ask that you be willing and able to do a little PR and let these sponsors be a part of the experience. Pictures with you and boat. Answer their questions. Allow them (or their 5 year old) to sit in the seat if they wish (not in the water unless you want them to). Sponsors to get some pit passes and be allowed to “hang out”. Anything else you can think of to make them feel welcome and that they got something for their $$$$$.

| Can you fill us in regarding, deadline for pre-registration, the course layout, lenght of the legs and how many, accomadations in Riggins, would someone going down to race with only a race boat be able to bum a ride with someone to pre-run?

You can register at the event Tech-In on Friday April 14. HOWEVER, the pre-registration concept is to allow you to secure a local sponsorship. The deadline for that is when all the local sponsors (I think there were 15-16 last year) have already been allocated. The course is about 8 miles total in length. Starts a couple miles above town. Ends about 3 miles downstream from town. We run 6 legs on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. (Been some discussion about adding a couple to each day, but it is only in the head scratching stage.) Saturday is two legs in the morning, starting approximately 9 am, with a 1 1/2 to 2 hour break to readjust boat, mind, body and shake the jitters out. 4 more legs in the afternoon. Some down time between each leg. Sunday will start about 9 and the 4 legs will be back to back with just enough time to sweep the course, reset the course and safety boats and timers and then go again. I have some pictures from about this time last year that I could post of some of the features. Did not get any for Time Zone or Tight Squeeze however. Probably be more water this year than last. Snow pack is much more than we have had for over three years. Water will probably be "larger" and more technical, but there is more line options then also.
Most of the racers just show up with a race boat. There is lots of pre-run opportunities. Rich Friend, the Race Director, is a former racer and knows the importance of looking at the water and had several boats on the water last year for teams to spend time on the water. We want you to be prepared and comfortable with the situation and the course. Most of the pre-running takes place on Friday. However several of the teams will pre-run again EARLY Saturday and Sunday mornings to make sure nothing has changed too much. Usually can hook a ride with somebody to again review the course. There is the opportunity for test and tune most of the afternoon Friday. There is a couple of miles of the actual course open for running the race boats. Even through some of the lesser rapids and one major corner so you can be sure how your boat is going to handle the water and the rough.
There are several motels in town. We should be able to post links to them. It seems like several have websites and contact info. There is also several commercial camping areas (have showers, laundry, full hook-ups) and you can stay free on the public land at Shorts Bar and Island Bar. Just need to have a tent, motor home , trailer or whatever . Dry camps with chemical / pit toilets.
Hope this helps. Post if you need more info. I do have some pictures that I can post of some of the river features and the launch, pits, camping.
2006 will be the 23rd running of the Salmon River Race.

The salmon river race is coming quick and all us Canadians are trying to get ready 2months earlier than normal. It sounds like there will be 5 race boats from Canada coming down and another 2-3 pleasure boats.
I'm sure it'll be as good a time as last years race. Looking forward to a great time.

Rapids with names-Coming upriver from Lightning Creek
Lightning-Cherry Creek, Tight Squeeze, Time Zone, Race Creek (not really a rapid per se, but some big green water and good chop), then a really tight S turn with some rocks as you come into the Town Hole. The 2 features here are called Glass Wave and 911 Rock. High speed run through the Town Hole. Small tricky rapid-Preachers Rock and Salmon Rapids on the top on the Town Hole. Another S curve (fairly tight) at the confluence of the Main and Little Salmon with a small cataract named Mill Wave. Then shallow with rocks through sweeping turns. Right by Short's Bar (where we will be launching and the main pits). Some more no name chop and rollers here and there but mostly flat out to Island bar. There is always some rolly and green water depending on flow levels. This will be a lot like the Trinity except "larger". We are in a deep, steep canyon. Lots of rock.
Going Downriver from the start at….
Island Bar: Long flat spot on river east side. It's an island during really high flows. Capable of launching boats here. Not a concrete ramp. Just back down the river rock.
Goose Poop Beach: Mile 0.5. Lots of geese hang out here after eating sometimes, hence the name.
Shorts Bar: Mile 2.5. This is our launch / pit area. Nice calm stretch down to---
Mill Wave(II): Mile 3. The rapids start here with a splash through these waves.
Salmon Rapids (II): Located at the confluence of the Little Salmon River. Splash through the waves, but stay off the cliff on the right!
Preachers Rock(II-III): Stay out of the hole!
Riggins: The city boat ramp is here.
911 Rock (II): Named after it was featured on the TV show "Rescue 911" several years ago. Also called "Go Left, Go Right or You're Fired".
Glass Wave (II): Mile 5. Big Waves at lower flows.
Race Creek (II-III): At higher flows you better be good or go around this bad boy!
Time Zone (III-IV): There's rocks on the right. This is one of the better known rapids on the river. High use photo area. Rafters have lots of out of boat experiences here!
Tight Squeeze (II-III): Mile 6. Narrow, one big tongue rapid. Lots of rollers on top end.
Cherry Creek (II): Mile 8.5
Lightning Creek: Mile 9. Finish area. Don’t get into Chair Creek Rapid!!
