the letters and numbers on a race boat have to be on the first 50% of the boat. what is the minimum size of the numbers and letters on the sides of the boat? I need to buy a rule book I guess any help would be great.

Until you buy one, the 2011 UIM rule set for Jet River Racing is on pages 434-461 and is available in PDF format here:

http://www.uimpowerboating.com/vsite/vfile/page/fileurl/0,11040,4916-204371-221594-171832-0-file,00.pdf

it is a rather large file and takes a while, but once you get it called up, you can download and save it and have your very own reference that is much quicker to access. It is not printable but can be searched.

Numbers are dealt with in section 900.8 #17 on page 444 but that also sends you to section 206.02 that is found on page 180-181. There is an explanation drawing on 181.

Numbers must be at least 32 cm (13 inches tall)

Wide: at least 14 cm (5.5 inches)

Numbers have to be white on black background, black on white background or any color that is contrasting and that can be clearly seen from 50 meters.

If the number is CLEAR and easy read, you're OK.

The UIM rulebook says nothing regarding the first 50% of the boat, but If you want to be nice to the officers, you should try to place it there. It makes their job easier.

If I remember correctly this topic was brought up at the end of last year at the Rules/Awards meeting. It was said for the worlds that boat numbers must be on the front 50% of the boat along with the class they were in. So if you put your # on the back I would bring some duck tape incase they make you change it.

Couple more things to consider;

- 206.02 “No number shall begin with zero”.

- UIM 206.03 “the absence of the race number or part of that race number leads to the disqualification of that boat from that heat only”.

So...numbers made out of duct tape might get you in trouble.
