RCMP in new jet boat and helicopter do surveillance

Expect to meet the RCMP on the water in a shiny new jet boat this year.
Const. Kurtis Milbrandt, the pilot for the last four years, was
putting the detachment's new jet boat through its paces on the
Athabasca River on Wednesday, June 1, working with the RCMP helicopter
crew who flew over the land alongside the river, doing surveillance.
Milbrandt explained, "They're just checking. The best time for
spotting is before leaves come out."

Stolen quads and other vehicles may be abandoned in such isolated
locations, he said.

He listed the features of the jet boat on the water going as far as
the Alberta Newsprint outlet by the river and back. It was an
exhilarating ride and an opportunity to observe that jet boating takes
attention and skill, not something to be done while drinking.
For the constable, who admits to thoroughly enjoying his jet boat
duties, it was a great opportunity to check out the brand new boat, a
vessel whose cost he estimated at about $150,000. It replaces the
RCMP's previous 25-year-old jet boat and can go about 50 miles an
hour.

Built specifically for the RCMP, it is fully equipped to exceed
transport Canada specifications and has a six-litre Kodiac engine, a
marine radio, a police radio and GPS (global positioning system).
To qualify as the pilot Milbrandt took a one-week course through
Transport Canada which give him operator classification allowing him
to operate a commercial vehicle as long as 150 feet.
The RCMP use the jet boat to patrol rivers, checking for operator who
are impaired by alcohol, enforcing boating regulation and looking for
missing people. He said the Athabasca River is swift moving and has
two currents, very rapid in the depths and less so toward the surface.
Rescuing people from it is difficult with the current making a regular
weight person weigh as much as 400 pounds. The RCMP and EMS conduct
practice training to prepare.
Milbrandt said the boaters police meet on patrol tend to be friendly
and co-operative, pleased to see them. "We have a jet boat society in
town. We find them generally really good.
"We're really out here just to make sure that the people know the

safety rules, make sure that they have their life jackets."
