flexplate- my zz4 came with one that I use. Have used flywheels in the past, just extra weight.

Thanks for the info about the flex plate. I couldn't use that little flexplate, I figured you guys would tease me. It looked like it was from a honda civic ! I also couldn't use a top mount starter with it... I installed a 168 tooth flexplate with adapter and it worked out ok.
Do all flexplates have a little wobble to them ?
What angle do I mount the motor on ? I have the boat level, gunnels and transom and the carb is also level, any input as to what angle to mount the motor ? I'm using a 4 point mount. I'm guessing I should try to simulate the three point angles ?
And lastly, what headers do I use, I've tried several car headers turned upside down and none clear the transom more than half an inch.....

It's a good idea to build a guard over the flex plate, when you get water in the bottom of the boat, the flex plate picks it up and get your distributer wet

Real good tip on the guard, might let you finish with a leak!
Like how you did your plate and starter mount. None of my flexplates have ever run dead-on flat either.

Rooster , set your engine with the crankshaft parallel with the pumpshaft . Rewarder make a lot of the raceboat headers and are reasonable . know of a set for a zz4 that might be available , i'll check .

thanks for your help guys, I'll fab up a simple splash guard for my wobbly flywheel.
I mounted the motor nearly flat, leaving some room for a good sized dent beneath the oil pan......
From what I understand about a zero angle driveshaft is that the needle bearings don't move at all and they get flattened and fail wheras if there's a slight angle, they rock back and forth and last longer.
It's amazing how all the small parts hold a project up !
headers, carb, wings and comm sys. I don't have much time to work the bugs out until july...

Rooster , "mounted the motor nearly flat " so is that to say parallel to the keel ? pump and crankshaft should be parallel . to get the 2 or 3* in the driveline raise the engine but the shafts should be parallel .

Good Point RPM< i should have stated that, if your running a single u-joint the the two shafts need to have a few degrees of separation, if your running two u-joints the the shafts need to be parralel but have a different height to create the exact same angle in both u-joints. Now in the case on a CV joint it doesnt matter and i doubt your using a CV, it just an FYI

If the wobbly flexplate bothers you, get " THE WHEEL " Its a solid steel unit that doesnt move. AMS in edmonton sells them.

It is easier to find the starters that go with the 168 tooth flywheel than it is to find a starter that fits the flexplate.
They seem to be more common and in stock more often as of last week. Even using suitable cross references like a 85-87 Camaro with 5 speed manual trans.
None of the GM Dealers from Dawson Creek to Whitecourt had any in stock for my zz4. Had to order one in.
I have raced with both and see no reason for the extra weight of the flywheel. Parts availability, maybe!
