Have a 2010 lynx with kodiak injected sbc and hamilton pump. The engine uses a liter of oil every 15 hours. We run it at 2900 to 3100 rpm depending on the load, using Shell 10-30 W oil. Is this amount of oil usage within acceptable limits or should i be talking to Kodiak before the warranty expires? I would appreciate any comments on this.

Sounds very excessive useage of oil in a 15 hr period. I would try running a higher viscosity oil like a 15w 40 or even a 20w 50 to see if there is any change in oil consumption. Personally I like running a higher viscosity oils in marine engines they operate at higher rpm's compared to a normal vehicle engine using 10w30 oils.

i had a350 kodaik with the same problem. changed to a dif grade of oil , more viscosity , solved my problem. i would try this first. i use 15w40

I agree run a higher viscosity oil.

what temp are you running the engine at, if your too cold you will use oil,get your temp up to 165

The engine has a 160 degree thermostat and that is where it runs, considering installing a 180, so that the heater would put out more heat while running. Going fishing tomorrow and will drain the oil after I load and will try a higher viscosity, although there may not be many more days left this fall to try the ideas, I have wondered many times why the engine came with a 160 degree thermostat as I would prefer that it run somewhat warmer

well then try a 180 but watch to make sure that it cools enough on a long pull your cylinder walls may be glazzed from running too cold if you get your heat up it should help, I had this problem , more oil consumption and it fixed it

Normally marine engines come with a 160 thermostat. Most are timed at 28 to 32 degees and some as high as 35 witch creates heat. You will want no less then 15w 40 synthetic blend. Changing to a higher heat thermostat will give you more heat running a heater in cooler fall weather the water is alot colder going through the heat exchanger. Running a 180 with more than 32 degree advance timming will cause hard engine starting once hot and diesel when turning it off in warm weather conditions. A sand trap is highly recommended to keep your heat exchanger free and clear of any blockage eliminating enigine coolant failure. If your looking for a bit more heat try a higher spark plug heat range. Running a higher heat range in marine engines a higher viscosity oil should be used expecialy in warm water and weather conditions.

marine engines use a 160* t-stat to keep the heads cooler and the air temp down in a closed engine compartment to help prevent detonation . running a 180* in the cooler weather help with a quicker warm-up and a nice heater . i agree that you might want to take a degree or 2 of timing out with the 180 , but have to say your off-track with the hotter plugs . the harder an engine gets worked the colder the plug you need , running a hot plug in a marine engine is asking for pre-ignition .

I have bad news about ss rattler <I have heard all the information from a second hand source but Knowing the area i believe i have the story right < please forgive me if i get it wrong< about two weeks ago Doug was fishing on the south sask they were having problems with the boat ,they decided to load up ,his brother went to get the truck when he came back next thing he saw was the boat drifting away without anyone inside and that was the last they seen of him. really sad news
I am not sure what else to say but for those that know Doug he will be missed I am sure

As far as I know he is still missing , they have had some search and rescue help I heard even some specialist or whatever with side scan sonar and all that but he still hasn't been found ,out were he lives is really almost in the middle of nowhere ,so maybe lack of searchers is part of the problem ,not many jet boats in the area ,but I am sure the ones that are there have been helping out ,I did a search on the net for news but I couldn't find any ,probably due to were he is located also
