If the rule is 4" below the roll bar then according to Cromie's pic he's breaking it.

http://www.uimpowerboating.com/vsite/vfile/page/fileurl/0,11040,4916-200969-218192-162502-0-file,00.pdf

It's in the 2010 - Circuit - Rules. River racing rules are section 900 which begins on page 411. Also sections 100, 200, 400 apply.

Roll bar details are on page 430. Section 9.15.2

Lots of reading to do if you're going to race.

Cautionary note: the various national authorities do make variations to some of the rules. Also UIM varies the use of "should" or "recommended, versus "must".

The link says URL not found. Are they getting ready to update to the 2011 rules?

Yes, the 2010 PDF file for the circuit rules is removed from the UIM site. The 2011 version should be posted in early Feb. The 2010 spec for chrome moly tube was 1 1/2" dia. 0.065" wall. With a minimum distance of 4 inches to any side of the helmet.

but if i remeber correctly the roll bar does not have to be chromoly as far as the 2010 rule states.in my opinion i think it should be chromoly in all of them. yes it is more exspensive but a cheap piece of life insurance I'd say. and for those of you that think its not worth it I'm sorry to say but you might want to look back at what happened to Bruce Mills(222 or 221 ricochet rabbit) on the salmon a few years ago(god rest his soul) if he had of had a chromoly roll cage it just might have been a different outcome.

does that also mean 4" clearance behind the helmet, or is that just side to side? Is there any UIM rule regarding how far forward the top bar above your head can go?

its got to be high enough that when straight lined from the top of roll bar to nose of boat it clears the top of your helmet by 2 inches i believe. not 100% sure though Alumaman should be able to clarify

Some rules are intentionally vague. If an organization is to stipulate too much then they need an army of engineers and lawyers to write and defend those rules. That’s why the phrase... “must have a well structured roll bar.” is used.
Aluminum is also allowed by UIM with minimum requirements of 1-5/8 inch or 2 inch tube with a wall thickness of 0.150”
If I was building new I would go with chrome moly. Also I do not believe aluminum is permitted in the US rules, thereby causing an issue if you wanted to run there.
The verbiage in the UIM 900.15 is kind of vague about the 4” side definition. But it does reference rule 509.05 which is fairly clear about requiring 4” clearance on the top and not less than 4” on the sides. Section 500 rules do not apply to river marathon, but I believe the indented reference is for the driver to have 4” clearance around the helmet.
But... boats get sold, and crews change out, and seats gets moved, etc. Etc.
The forward center bar is optional, and the only requirement would be for 4 inch clearance.
For obvious reasons you want your head to have some clearance with the bottom of the river if your upside down, and you will hear and read about the “line drawn from the top of the roll bar to the nose of the boat. UIM does not reference or specify a minimum clearance to this imaginary line. They do mention in 509.05... the roll bar having “4 inches of clearance and covering at least 50% of the helmet surface and extending away at not less than 45 degrees. So in effect they do the same thing by bringing in the 50 %helmet coverage component.
Then again... just my interpretation and opinion.
