My advice is to go with a Capstan winch, and use good rope, like Amsteel Blue.

Stay away from drum winches or anything that uses cable.

Simpson is the most compact and is what I have seen most boaters buy. (Also what I went with.) It provides an excuse to carry a chain saw, which is good to have as well.

The other product that I have seen discussed is by the Portable Winch Co. Canadian eh!

Hey Ram,

I did alot of reseach on the same subject. A Capstan Portable Winch from Portable Winch.com is the way to go I would say. The best price I found was from Explorer Industries in Edmonton, the guy will sell the for about the 1275 range (or he was anyway) you will also need some rigging, a couple of snatch blocks, shackles, rope...ect...ect and a case to put it all in, Explorer sells all it all. Its going run you close to 2k to go that way, but then you have some seriuos pulling power!! Plus it has alot of other great uses. Check out there site online. Only downfall is they are a bit on the heavy side compared to the other portable winches, like the chainsaw style, but I still say they are the way to go.

I have the "Portable Winch" it is pricey but it paid for itself the first time out!weighs about 32 pounds, honda motor and is about 20'' squared now just waiting for the "Pull-Pal" (portable anchor) to show up from the US should work well ???? winch was $1350! This is alot cheaper than havin the Edmonton F.D pull you off a sandbar on the Norst Sask! Wink
