Why do most Berkly style pumps have a ball and socket style steering deflector (with the upstream nozzle part being the socket and the downstream steering deflector having the ball joint) Where as fabricated race nozzles seem to have the steering deflector as the sockect component.
Is it because the race nozzle is more effecient for speed or is it because its to hard to fabricate a lightweight race nozzel using the other method?
Cheers
Peter

american turbine does it backwards, and berk/dom says it picks up sand and packs in there, wearing out the parts. what i wonder is why they try to seal it at all? the steel race nozzles dont seal the water, instead just steer it and this seems to be much simpler and easier on the helm. plus the turn radius on my boat is WAY tighter with the steel, it can turn in its own length whereas the berk nozzle i tried were total dogs at the dock.

I think if you run your hand thru the nozzle on a berk style and a steel nozzle you will answer your own question right away.
I haven't even seen a steel nozzle up close but Id be willing to bet it is one smooth transition from bowl to exit point, in other words ideal smooth flow.
A berk nozzle(with trim) has several seriously abrupt transitions and difering sizes at both swivel joints and Im sure this would flow like total crap compared to a steel one if tested. (The pivot pin sockets also can't help things any)
Ive always liked the idea of 'hitting' the flow after it exits the nozzle for steering. Seems to make more sense to me efficincy wise. When the boat is going straight the flow is at its idea and is not "hitting" anything. With a berk youre sufffering with those crappy transitions all the time no matter which way you're steering.
That said I would never explore a river without reverse (needed it badly a few times lol) so my river boat will always have a berk style nozzle. I hope to have time to make some steel ones for thew tunnel soon, I've just been too busy
Just my .02
Cheers

Xerophobic, You make a good point !
I bought a Race Nozzle to try, picked up 1 to 2 mph. I also will always have a Nozzle with reverse cause my main activity is Boondock'n and you never know what's around the next corner or how small the water gets.
I made a reverse bucket for my race nozzle but for 1 mph its not worth the trouble weldind the sockets on........

Hey snik, before the Eagle forum was changed, there was a tread and some one from the US had a few pictures of one. It was for sale, but as far as I now, the benefits just weren't there.
