Come on guys, surley someone took over a camera and a laptop. Why no photos of pre-running and hanging around the boats. I know Whitey ain't up on all the high tech stuff but someone else must be. Look out for the big blue boat boys.

Have assembled a compilation of various articles...appeared 10/04/05 through 10/08/05---it's already tomorrow there The effects of the outbreak of the Didymo Algae are spreading. Jet boat racing officials are holding talks with local councils and bio security experts to put in place preventative measures in light of the outbreak. Gold Ridge Hotel 2005 World Jet Boat marathon race controller, John McPhee says jet boaters are passionate about preserving New Zealand's water ways. McPhee says they will be doing everything in their power to ensure they don't do anything to spread the problem. He says they plan to sanitize all boats and trailers as they leave any infected waters. The Didymo Algea has been confirmed in the Oreti and Upper Clutha Rivers, parts of those rivers will be used for racing during the marathon in a couple of weeks. The Otago Regional Council yesterday announced it would insist all of the boats are cleaned under council supervision between rivers. Council chairman Stephen Cairns said that organisers of the jet-boat marathon, had swapped events on two days and agreed to a cleaning regime, overseen by Otago Regional Council staff. On October 18, the race will start on the Matukituki River in the morning, followed in the afternoon by racing on the Clutha River from Pisa Moorings to Wanaka and return. On October 21, the race will start in the Mataura River in the morning and then race in the Oreti River in the afternoon. The boats will be sprayed with a detergent at high pressure as they are removed from the water. They will also be water blasted. Boat trailers will have holes drilled through in them to drain water. A council-owned company, Regional Services, will carry out the cleaning, overseen by council compliance staff. Biosecurity New Zealand is unable to guarantee Didymosphenia geminata (didymo) will not be spread by the upcoming world jetboat marathon. Changes are likely for the marathon, although by the time it begins on October 16, didymo could be recorded in rivers throughout the South Island. Fish and Game Central South Island manager Jay Graybill said yesterday that staging the jetboat marathon was perhaps not best practice but they were still studying options. The race was scheduled on the Waitaki River. Fish and Game Otago manager Niall Watson said the timing of the marathon was unfortunate . "They need to be very careful they are not going to exacerbate the situation," Mr Watson said. "The more you move from river to river, the more you increase the risk (of spreading didymo)." A meeting in Wanaka next week was being organised by Biosecurity NZto explain didymo. Biosecurity NZ post-clearance manager Peter Thomson said if the risk to rivers was sufficiently high, the jetboat event would be cancelled. But he doubted this would happen. Race organisers were meeting regional councils in Southland and Otago about measures to control the spread of didymo. Otago Regional Council compliance manager Alison Lane said the council was working through options such as changing the race route and racing on clean rivers before moving to didymo-affected rivers. Pressure cleaners might be used to scrub down the boats, although protocol for the cleaning had to be agreed. Mr Thomson was confident the risk could be managed but stopped short of a guarantee. "We can't guarantee anything. Even cleaning your fishing gear with bleach does not guarantee didymo won't survive. "The focus is on trying to manage this risk the best way we can. We want to get this risk down to an acceptable level and this has to be done by altering the event." He said it was a huge event, bringing in millions of dollars to the country, and if the appropriate action was taken, the race would go ahead.

Looks like you need a few gallons of Zep Industrail Purple (have to take into account of Tree Hungers or Greens) causing the racers to go to the extremes here.Do they take into account that this algee maybe caused by the over flow of farming drainage rich in nitrogen?? or run off of cattle and live stock?? or is it a natural caused event.See Blackwater 100 to much crap in the water at that event but never took into account that it was the same level or even higher year round. Its not like Lake Michigan and Zebra Muscle these came from Sea Ships that where blowing out thier lav bilge tanks sometimes these thing are man caused and some are natural Cheers
