Looks like I'm going with the ZZ-383. The cost of rigging a LS3 is going to be way more than I'd like to spend. Has anyone had Louie do the head porting on their 383 yet? I know on the ZZ4 engines, it made a good gain.
Also, are you running pump gas or do you need to juice it up a bit.

Baldy.....I took my out of the crate and dropped it in. I thought of getting AMS to do some work, by decided against it for a few seasons. What I really want to do is to buy another in a couple years and give this one to Louie to refresh and make a couple mods. Fresh motor on the stand never hurt nobody!!!!

FYI-With a 383/425 and a 'B' cut I can keep up to a SC 6.0L running a 'A'. Can't outrun him, but with a few mods I'm sure I'll walk away and have more gas money at the end of the day!

Bald Man , ZZ383 would definately be a easier and less costly way to go . do they have decent wet exhaust for the LS engines ? the alloy LS engines power to weight numbers look awesome , if the block and the rest of it can handle power by the hour they will be amazing . i just looked in the new catalogue for the first time and it shows a 480 hp one available with a carb intake , torque curve looks very nice for a performance boat .

A few of us using these out in NZ. Whether it be power to weight ratio, fuel economy or ease of working on engine, these generation IV engines beat the 'last century' cast chevs in every way (no bias here of course!). Working with one of the sprint car engine builders in the US we have developed an LS3 package that is an honest 580hp. This is a production based engine with custom steel pan, remote oil filter, aftermarket rods & pistons (to handle bigger cam) and race cam. Complete engines are around 10k.

vettefan , do you have any experiences with the stock LS3 cast piston , powder metal rod assemblies failing Question or did you just go with the built -up engines right off ?

RPM - mainly we are running stock pistons & rods. The engine builder in the US, who custom builds the engines, has put together around 80 of these engines over the last 2 years or so - mainly with big cams running in street cars or boats - and has not had any issues to date (running up to 7000 RPM).

Cheers, Brian Direen
