here are the results of 2 days of testing at AMS on the new LS3 Carb crate moter. this is a stock GM engine...we tried numerous different exhaust and carb set ups all testing was done with 100LL Av Gas..results are very impressive, especially note the dyno shhet with water cooled lightning exhaust.

560hp all aluminum should be reliable. now lets see what the F(*&D and D%^&E boys can pull out of their crates? This is going to be one helluva class. 100+MPH for sure Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

dales motor was off about 40 HP it had a smaller cam and fuel injection the carb version looks to be the clear winner as even GM,s numbers show the carb model 35HP ahead of the injected motor

Rob, Is Dales engine the LS376/480? I realize the dyno graphs in the GMPP book are not exact, but both the LS376/480 & LS376/515 appear to have about the same hp at 5500 rpm?? How did they actually compare on AMS's dyno for hp at where they'll probably be ran at 5600-5700 rpm?

the problem with this EFI is that it is built for the low hood clearance of the corvette and is more restrictive than the free flowing single plane manifold supplied with the carb version. from what we understand there is a taller EFI manifold available from GM for trucks as well as after market pieces that should perform better. it is doubtful any will surpass the the carb version in the rpm range that is important to jet boat racers 5000 -6000 rpm it is also tough to justify the added expense of the EFI

Dales motor was equal to the carb version below 5000 RPM. of intrest after our testing we jetted up the carb motor reduced the timing to 23 degrees which is the suggested pump set up and it made 515 HP just what GM said it would

I don't know how much they are in Canada but they're $7,100 in the USA. You also have to buy either the ignition box for $360 USD or if you want to use a distributor type ignition, you have to buy a front distributor drive cover for $400 USD (plus a distributor)

Just a note. not meaning anything by it but the density altitude on the dyno sheets changed by a bunch in 6 min. It could be the just the running of the engine may change some of this in the dyno room. The numbers would be closer if it had remained the same. Looks like a real nice engine for a Cheby anyhow. Laughing

was wondering about that too . are the the c torq and c pwr corrected so that there comparable ? were the 1 3/4 x 3" headers the ones that were on the engine in the picture of the boat ? they have a slightly higher peak torque but slightly less by 5800 , were would you rev this engine to in a race ?

The tests were done on two different days which explains the density ALT difference the headers shown are 1 7/8 to 2 in steps that were very close to the lightnings in performance

I think the time on the top right of the page is the time the sheet was printed. The actual Dyno times appear slightly lower and to the left on the page and are Jan 13/7:59 pm for the dry headers and Jan 14/12:01 pm for the Lightening Headers. Damn navigators are always gauking around instead of keeping their eyes where they should be Rolling Eyes Razz Laughing

Rob, the specs on the dyno sheet for the dry headers are listed as "1 3/4-3.0-16 col" which I would think means 1 3/4 primaries, 3.0 diameter X 16 inch long collectors or is that a misprint and the dry headers are 1 7/8 to 2? What are the specs on the lightening headers?

Regardless, the hp is virtually the same if the engines are ran around 5600-5900 rpm. A person might try and spin them higher to get the extra hp, but then they'll probably have to run a "D" impeller which will be crappy out of the hole and the higher rpm will also probably greatly reduce the reliability of the engines.

we ran three different sets of dry headers the test shown here are dales which had better torque below 5500 rpm that being said there was very little difference between them. I plan to run it around 5800
