Should I be worried?Looking at Baldman's pic in Jason's thread,I see that his oil runs around 60 psi WOT I imagine. My last motor seemed really low (30-35psi)but I was assuming it was the shitty electronic sender/gauge in the dash. When I dropped in the ZZ383 I mounted another gauge under the engine cover and tubed it to a tee where the electric one came off of.The best I saw out of the direct one was 40-45psi WOT.Don't quote me exactly on #'s but I have never saw 60 |

General rule used to be 10 psi for every 1000 rpm, but the people at Dart tell me with todays oils you can get by with less. _________________ HANG ON NUTLICKER !! |

Try changing your sending unit. The type of oil and filter you use can also effect your pressures and Doc's right with the 10 psi/1000 rpm rule of thumb, you're not that far off if your rpm's 4500-5000 rpm. _________________ It's always the Navigators fault! |

No worries AOTRs. My gauge was zeroing at 10 lbs in that photo. That motor would run in the 50 lbs area. |

Hit up a engine shop, screw in a master mechanical guage, take a run on the river and the mechanical guage will give the honest reading. Those electrical guages arnt as accurate as a mechanical |

Electronic pressure gauges are not accurate.
Get a mechanical, oil-filled pressure gauge.
JEGS part number 105-5421
Have you done any cam work on that engine? Turns out that cam bearings are trickier to adjust than main bearings. A poor job there leads to big tolerances and low oil pressure.
As long as you have some oil pressure, the bearings will have something smooth to ride on.
If it's at least 35 psi, keep going. It it goes to less than that, turn the engine off.
If you have not done anything to the engine, this might be the sign of the bearings just getting old and loose. Sometimes a bigger flow oil pump solves the problem. _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |

Motor's never been touched and I'm guessing it has about 20-30hrs on it(without looking).I hear what your saying about the elec ones,so I put a mechanical one in the engine compartment. It was defiantly better than the one in dash(elec)but I was figuring if a ZZ4 was pushing 60 than mine should be pretty close to that.BM just cleared that up for me.My neighbor has a good snap-on pressure set and I will borrow it as soon as the damn ice goes out.If I remember right I was over 35 always, so I should be safe....Thanks for all the input.-CL |
