I started to smell a slight gas odor the other day outside but did not think too much of it. With the warmer weather I figured the fuel in the tank of the boat must be warming up and expanding and letting some vapors off, no big deal. Today while taking down the Christmas lights I noticed it was quite strong so I figured I'd better have a closer look. Low and behold there was gas running out of the vent. How could this be? I never filled the tank that full before putting it away in the fall. So I decided I better siphon some out to stop the leak and end the stink before the neighbor gets on my back. Upon opening the fuel cap a sizable amount of pressure was released and the leak stopped instantly. After thinking about how this tank could have pressure on it while it has a vent I clued in that the vent was liquid sealed and the pressure in the tank was coming from the fuel warming up and pushing the gas out the vent. The boat was sitting tilted to one side because of a flat tire I neglected to fix which was enough of an angle to seal the vent. I learned today not to fill the boat to full for storage and don't decide to fix the flat tire in the spring. The leaking gas also wrecked the grey grip covering on the swim deck.

I also bought one of those blue tarps from Canadian Tire to place over the travel tarps and boat for the winter. While dealing with the gas leak issue I had to shovel a couple feet of snow off the boat to get to the gas cap. I pull back the blue tarp and see that my custom made high $$$ travel tarp is destroyed. All of the weight from the snow tore all of the snap buttons and ripped the hell out of everything. What a mess. Expensive lesson to learn.

Ya the first year or so, you learn alot about boating!! I have never been so sore after the first few wipe outs and pushing that damn boat across places it should have never been in the first place Shocked Shocked
You should store your boat with no fuel in it. It goes stale after a long winter. Running with stale fuel could cause your engine to detonate and melt down a piston or two.
Inside storage is always preferred, but if you can't find a place, try keeping the snow off it.
