Is that what your taking down to Riggins? Berkley B is pretty close , might want to shave a little off. At 2000' here haven't found any more left after 5000 rpm even with a 2" carb spacer . You need a small oil cooler especially with the stock pan. _________________ Rick's Precision Machine

Go with the cheap oil cooler, water sloshing around inside the boat

Ive been around a few FX boats and all but 1 runs an oil cooler. All the boats Ive been in run right at or slightly above 5000 rpm, with 5200 being the highest. I never went into detail on what impeller they were running. On one boat we did a swap to a custom welded impeller. The engine spun it to 5400 but we lost some speed. So we went back.
Does that help? _________________ Official boat whore. |

We picked up speed above 5000 in Peace River with the lower altitude , but not in P. G. We run a B- Berkley and a custom cut Aggressor for impellers. Looked up altitude in Riggins 1800' . We have launches open here now if you want to come down this way when you go be glad to help you with any testing if you need a impeller or one cut . _________________ Rick's Precision Machine

I ran a "B" at 5050 RPM thru 1 5/8" hearders (I think), and an Steiger oil cooler. Anything more on a ZZ-4 and I don't believe you are getting any more out of that motor, other than risking a meltdown. Plenty of guys in the US Champion race a few years ago were pushing them harder and they did not finish. Can't win if you don't finish. |

Actually another case of don't believe everything you read on the 'net.
Altitude at Shorts Bar (where we launch) is actually 1424-1432 feet above sea level, by altimeter every time I have checked it. Not a big difference, but......it might make a difference. _________________ "faster, Faster, FASTER until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of DEATH"#163 "Tuff-n'-Nuff" |

Top Dawg,
I do not run an oil cooler. Instead I run a bigger oil pan. I use a Milodon 8 quart pan that has the windage trays in it to keep oil off the crank. Paul from Albany is actually right about the cheapest way to cool oil. I have had a minor leak in my boat from the day I got it and I allow the water to slosh around on the pan for a while on courses with lots of turns. I wait to bilge them out about every few minutes or so.
I also run a full B cut impeller. In Hoopa it will spin just a hair above the 5000 rpm mark. Never have tried anything else. Seems to work fine so I use it. Later..... _________________ Merv... |

I think its a good idea to run one as it pre warms the intake charge of water into the block if you plumb it in that way!! |

1.- Yes, I use an oil cooler. I haven't changed the oil pan
2.- Depending on altitude, and on how good is the air, and how good you are selecting carburetor jets (I'm very BAD at that), you will see between 5000 and 5200 RPM's with a "B" cut impeller.
That's the case over here... _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |

OK, I've got everything right so far !
Rpm's, impeller, and small oil cooler.
Next question, what size headers ? Tubes and collector ?
Jessie, I know what you run, I can hear you stand on it back here in Iowa . . . _________________ I refuse to join a group that would allow a person like me to be a member. |
