I recently purchased a 1998 Jetboat with a GM 350 in it. Block says 5.7LG SGI.

I was giving the engine a once over to see what all was in rough shape and thought id change the distributor cap and rotor (little dirty). I noticed the Plug wires were hooked up in this order:

1-6-5-7-2-3-8-4 (Rotor direction clockwise, Engine direction Clockwise looking at the front)

I cant find anything online as to why this would be hooked up like this. The boat starts......a bit rough but runs and sounds smooth. Pulls 3900RPM

Should i just shake my head and hook it up 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and time it or does someone have some educating for me?

Definitely fix the firing order to prevent damaging the two crossed-up cylinders and to increase performance. The previous owner obviously had the #1 and #3 switched with each other by mistake. Put them in the correct order. You should check / clean or replace the spark plugs for those cylinders if they look fouled or heat damaged from the timing being off.
