Regretfully this isn't the type of post I'd assume be making after a great Canada day long weekend but I have to omit the cheery jokes and stories of my weekend up north partying.
I almost died Sat night after succumbing to carbon monoxide in the vberth of my buddies boat. This is no joke folks I was this close. I had climbed into the berth to change my wet clothes(from being in the water all day) and got a little cosy and decided to take maybe a 30 min nap before continuing to party. My buddy did check on me after a bit and I told him I was going to take a nap. It was a nap I would have never woken from if not for others checking on me over an hour later. I had already started uncontrolled vomiting while in an unconcious state which was dangerous enough in itself. Friends dragged me to the rear of the boat and I was unconcious and nearly in convulsions. 911 was called and I was taken by police boat to the local town and then by ambulance to the local hospital. I spent the night on oxygen and was released in the morning.
I was told my CO level in my blood was SEVEN TIMES what was normal for a non smoker. Instead of 0-5% I had a reading of 37%, 50 and you're dead
The poisoning was caused by a small inverter generator that was running on the boat but was obviously very poorly placed and likely filled the entire cabin with carbon monoxide.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE people do not assume this cannot happen to you. Get a CO detecter for your house, for your boat, your RV wherever you think it can build up while people are sleeping.
I spent the rest of the weekend not caring about much to be honest, just happy to be still around, to see my friends, enjoy the water etc I almost was done over our own stupidity and lack of realization this was a real real threat. I warned my buddy about this when he got the generator but we didn't pay enough attention to it and it nearly cost me my life. I'd read the recent warnings on the NZ forum and for that I feel that much more stupid. I/we should know better.
If this posting can make even one of you more aware of this threat than its more than worth it. Maybe someone can sticky it for a while, it could save someones life
This was easily THE scariest thing that has ever happened to me.
Cheers everyone, its great to be still around _________________ T-53 , why go up and down when you wanna go round and round???? |

I had something close to that happened to me last winter. We were sledding in the mountains and we had a small generator running too close to our enclosed trailer where we were sleeping. In the morning, everyone was dizzy and had huge head aches. It wasn't as bad as yours but it gave us all a wake up call regarding CO. Glad you made it, that would have been a shitty way to go. _________________ Bulls Eye Enterprises Inc.

Holly Sheite James. Glad to hear you are OK. That's some scary stuff for sure. I'll get a detector for the holiday trailer ASAP. |

Me and Marky were thinking about planning a trip to see you, but on second thought, really bad things seem to happen to you and it might be contagious.

nahhhh, this was a totally preventable thing that we should have known better about. You just can't play with this type of thing and be complacent, it CAN kill you and thats the purpose of the post. It did come damn close to killing me. I can't describe how scary it was slowly regaining consciousness on the sundeck of the boat, in the pitch black with a girl I had never met yelling at me, telling me help was coming and I was going to be ok while I couldn't move or speak or even see at that point. Then coming to havin no idea how I got where I was only to see a police and fire boat pull alongside us. It was just something I wouldn't wish on anyone
I don't wanna ruin the seriousness of this by going into any other details of the weekend but you guys should come up for the Aug long weekend at the island, we can run some rivers before heading out for the party

Well, It's good that the final outcome was a story to tell, and not the end of the story. Thanks for sharing. _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |
