So my boat goes in for paint in two weeks but i'm still on the fence about paint. I really want a full body paint but the builder is recommending I leave the bottom part of the side alone due to hitting stuff.

Have you guys noticed probs will full side paint, would you do it again if you did?

attached is a pic on how they recommend I paint it coverage wise. They say in the water you don't notice it.

The more paint you put on that boat the more you will regret it. I wouldn't go lower than the top body line if it were mine. There's a good reason why any 8 or 12 degree tough boat has very little side paint and it's almost always zolatone. The automotive paint in the picture will only look like that for about the first month you own it. Then it will be all scratched up and your 60 grande boat will look like chit. But the guy with the ugly zolatone will look good for years. This is of course if the boat is used and not just in the driveway.(Not saying your this type of guy) Just my $0.02. I had a boat with fancy paint once and it will haunt you. Just take a handful of sand and rub on the hood of your truck and you will get the idea.

PS I hope that isn't the trailer they are gonna sell you with your new boat...looks a little short.

Ya they probably use endura or something. Another option is to paint down to the top body line for most of the boat then drop down to the middle body line near the back kinda like a mopar hockey stick. My buddies firefish has that and it looks good and keeps the paint to a minimum where it will get scratched up the most. The bow and the tops of the gunnels see the most wear and tear, that's were the zolatone or the black box liner stuff is nice, then use fancy paint for the sides. Really the sides only get hit if you screw up loading, float into a rock when parked or trying to park. So if your careful it will probably be fine either way. It's the bow and gunnels that will drive you crazy when your buddy drags a cooler across them if you got fancy paint in those spots. LSA is fun. I'm guessing its a Hamilton behind it?

Tyler talked me out of full paint and I'm glad.....had a idiot park beside me at a poker rally and scratch the upper paint already(pretty bad)...the worst marks were on the aluminum so I assume that paint would be gone now. 1/2 paint is the best for a rugged boat...full is nice if you can keep away from hammerheads.

Leave it bare aluminum for now. Once its all scratched up, buff and polish. When its all scratched up again, then paint it.

Here is a 16ft 5.7 212 combo with a full interior and half side zolatone paint job.

I sure like zolatone, the only time ive had any wear off on my boat was when I slid up into and got wedged under a huge log. The boat sorta slid back and forth on it for about 2 mins, it was 1/2 way up on my windshield frame on the side so it's pretty noticeable. Other than that it's held up awesome for 4 years already.

Also if you leave it for awhile without paint, and don't keep it really clean you and everyone and everything will have black streaks all over from the raw aluminum.
