I didn't want to hijack the Alumaman thread so to continue the Easter weekend ride thing we were talking about. My bride and I went down to the launch this afternoon. The big iceburgs in front of the launch are kinda receeding. Two old boys came down with a brand new boat that was purchased in Arizona. They attempted to get the boat in the water in the very narrow open water section between the iceburgs and the gravel bar. The boat came off the trailer but there was not enough water to float the boat out into the river. So the trailer came back into the water and then the gong show started.
There was a huge chunck of ice (1.5 feet thick, 6 feet across) that was lodged to the bottom of the river. When the boat trailer came back for the second time it broke free and floated under the trailer. With the boat partially on the trailer it was impossible to get over this huge iceburg. So they backed up a little and I took a paddle and got on the trailer and attempted to move the burg out of the way and went for a bit of a swim. Finally got the burg out and the boat and they then tried to back the boat off the end off the gravel bar. Well the boat and the truck got stuck, and after some considerable effort they finally got the boat and truck back up to high ground, but before they did we noticed the Athabasca totally covered in ice. Some humongous ice jam must have let go and the whole river was covered in ice including some massive burgs.
Anyway the old boy came up and said he would have got rammy with it but now the river is not runnable anyway. Too much fun. _________________ Life is Great. It's Reality that Sucks! |
