story line: boat in the water for the first time this season. did pre-season checks and service prior to launch. got no more than 5 km when engine stopped abruptly. found crank to be seized. freed by hand and started. lasted 2 minutes and than repeat of seized engine. notice when turning by hand, could feel a rough spot and hear a grind noise(only in one spot).
don't have too much info on this motor. need help or suggestions as where to start or if anyone else had similar symptoms.

Sounds like a spun bearing. (or worse) I wouldn't doubt it would need a full rebuild.

I will bet that the plastic gear on your oil pump has sheared as they may gum up when not used .Stripped gear = no oil = screwed motor. I can send you a manual if you like. This is a known issue and if it turns out to be your problem remove the inj and pre- mix. If not remove it anyway everbody with a 175 should do this.

Hey ya a manual would be helpful. I have a 2005 year engine. S/N 0E427793. It's pretty common for this engine?! If so than ya i certainly will by pass the oil pump and start mixing. What's up with the oil pump! Why does it shear?

The gear on the crank is plastic and the one on the the oil pump is metal.I think that the shaft on the pump gets gummed up and the extra friction rips the crank gear.I have heard that this is less likely to happen if the motor is ran a lot. This is probably the most likely thing that will kill a 175 .There is a web site called Scream and Fly that has forum for Mercury enthusists . These guys are mostly Prop guys and a lot of them are racers the consensus there is that you are crazy to run the oil pump especially at high RPM.
I lost a 175 to oil pump failure and it was a low hour motor. I bought one down in Washington for parts and it too had suffered oil pump failure.The input shaft on the pump broke and the engine over revved stripping the oil pump gear. The guy fixed the pump and went for a rip and the engine seized 15 minutes later.
I can see no advantage to oil inj on a 175. As you know you cannot idle them very long or they will overheat. You need 3000 RPM to plane and once your motor hits that speed the oil inj will be inj at 40/1 anyway.So just premix at 40/1 and play it safe.

The other issue you can have on 175s is a stuck carb needle;if the carbs are not drained for winter the needle in one carb can stick closed....no fuel or lube for 2 cylinders
The motor will run ok but be down on rpm
The oil pump drive failure is also an issue ...especially if you do not run premium plus/synthetic oil in cold weather
When running in remote areas I mix 100:1 synthetic and keep an eye on my oil level...if the tank does not drop you have an oiling problem ...but the 100:1 will keep your motor from seizing

Well finally after tearing apart the motor, found the oil pump gear on the crank to be at fault. so a new one is on order. i will be mixing the gas after the rebuild.
Luckily the motor didn't suffer. just the gear!!!

Give us some more pictures of what you found, including the gear. What failed internally? Seized bearing?

well after talking with the mrs! she feels that it would be beneficial for her to have the oil pump operational, as she doesn't really how to mix the proper ratio. she just wants to turn key an go!!!

this is what i figured happened; the motor seized because the oil pump failed. now what i mean by failed is that it broke and caused a bind in the gear assembly causing the motor to stop.i didn't take a chance to run it back home. so i towed the boat. tore it up and found no damage to the pistons, rings, cylinder block or anything else, except the oil pump gear on the crank and the gear on the oil pump.
having a hard time uploading pics!!!
