I have some questions about the wings being used on many of the race boats. What kind performance increase is typically seen using these? How much lift are they capable of generating? Do they create enough lift that there is a real danger of a blow over at high speed? I have seem used primarily on tunnel hulls, but will they work as well on a vee bottom? |

I have a lightweight 19 steptech in FXV and can personally tell you the lift does make a speed difference. Actual MPH gains is difficult to say due to rapid changes in wind speed, wing angle, and many other variables. a side wind also has a definet handling effect and can come unexpectedly. I find that im constantly changing the pitch of the wings and trying to "kite" the boat as best as possible while remaining in control. |

They will work on v bottom but to lesser degree. A few designs out there with different approaches to lift. Drag on the airfoil is not much of a concern as it is usually only 30-50 lbs. The lift can be 100-200 lb depending on speed and design. The more lift in the wing the more twitchy it will be and usually the more abrupt the stall angle will be. They work and each boat requires a little different setup as usual. _________________ Mark

herrhauptman are you thinking of getting into FXV? Our class needs more participants and is great to get started but still competitive. |
