Hi guys,

The front gearbox of my 175hp sportjet powered boat has developed some water contamination sometime within the last 50 hours. The engine has about 400 hours on it and is a 2003 model engine. The last 70 odd hours has included a fair amount of gravel pumping on NZ braided rivers.

We changed the oil at the last service and ran the boat for about another 7 hours. Again the oil is milky and contaminated. The engine has a Mercury stainless grill and and the alloy bash plate has been replaced with a bisalloy bash plate at installation. There are no visible oil leaks.

Any ideas on the most common reason for water ingess in these gearboxes?

Hi Brian I need to know a couple of things. The first time you changed the gear oil was there water in it? or was it just milky?Do you change it every year?There may be some residual moisture/lube left in the case. The only way the water can get in to the gear housing is at the impeller shaft seals or the fill/drain screw washers?A gear housing pressure test will tell us what is leaking.
