Anyone have their steering cable melt on a sport Jet? Changed the cable and got 10 hours out of it before it melted. I've searched on the internet and found it does happen but I'm not sure what the fix is. The cable runs right beside the exhaust and from what i've read if your cooling water through the exhuast is plugged it will overheat and melt your cable. I checked the port off the block and all seems clear. Not sure what to do next. Any suggestions? |

Wrap the cable in the water pipe closed cell foam or move the cable outside of the pump and go through the transom Berkley style. |

It's quiet common with the 175 SJ exhaust melting the steering cable inside the pump box. If you plan on leaving the cable inside the pump box you can install a heat shield sleeve or a small heat resistant hose over top the cable. |

What I can't figure out is why the first cable lasted over 150 hours and the second one lasts 10? |

It must of been run without water in the pump box at one time. Just firing up the power head or high and dry on a gravel bar running without water in the pump box will do in the cable. |
