|
|
The more we boat, the more rivers seem to get added to the list of the one's we've conquered or want to go back to each year. So lets get our "bucket list" or in this case our "river list" going. Now this isn't about dying its about a list that says, you haven't lived until you've run the "............."
Let's hear what river or stretch of river is on your list. The more specific the better, highlighting those specifically tough to get to spots, or those that hold natures secrets, heh whatever makes them above the ordinary.
The more pictures and commentary the better. Let's see how far we can keep this thread going.
Maybe it will be the travel guide for planning next year's trips.

The Heart River that flows into the Peace River was one violent little river that faithful day May 6th 2007. I said 15 000 to 20 000 m3 / sec but meant per minute. We had to leave the boat there cause we broke the helm. We walked out and returned the next day with some parts, the river had gainned intensity and was flowing about 20 mph and had come up 2 more feet. We fixed the boat and hoped to make it to Nampa another 2 miles up river but we had to turn around when we came up to the falls. Navigating this narrow river going downstream with a 20mph current wasn't easy man. We made it about 5 miles and hit the bank so hard it knocked the motor off the pump, got to love those rummer mounted engines. From that point on it was total Kaos.

all these videos are of the first day, the second day was so hectic we never videoed. We ended up floating down at the rivers mercy and could not control the boat. At one point the river pushed us into a bunch of trees ( witch cleaned the windshield straight off ) and the boat come to rest, at that point I was trying to convince the owner that hey were still alive, lets tie off this thing and go get some tools to put the engine back on and at least have a fighting chance of getting back onto the trailler. Well Steve was on shore, I was half off the boat and Gilbert was trying to free the boat from the brush pile.

well I was sitting on the bow contemplating my next move, the boat was just about vertical and Gil was standing on the dash, all of a sudden the pump must have hit a rock and the boat stood straight up then disapered backwards along with Gilbert. I though for sure he was a gonner, we were already so exhausted from the cold and adrenaline rushing through our veins that I didn't think it was possible for him to survive.

I just ended up grabbing onto the closest thing I could after being in the water for a few seconds. I managed to get a hold of one of the bridge pillars and pull myself up on a plank that had been left there since construction. The only problem was going to get off of there. The only way was up a cliff or in the water again and I wasn't getting in there.

A couple minutes latter to my releif Gilbert came around the corner, he seen me and I gave him the thumbs up, we couldn't talk cause the river was so load but we knew we were alive.Search and rescue got involved and tried to get 2 fat guys into a jet legged Zodiac to come up the river. Well that was entertainning but pointless the experienced jet boater were around and tried tell these guys that the only way was to send a rope and harness down the cliff and pull me up. They had different ideas and after 4 hours of sitting there and 25 police and firemen scattered around they finaly listened and got me off there with a rope. Thanks to all those guys, but it definately showed me that our Peace River Police and Fire Department have no clue what they are doing when it comes to the riverand thats a scary though considering we have three that run through our town. Anyways they got me off, a month later the boat surfaced just at the mouth of the Heart where it dumps into the piece and we pulled it out and it's still never made it back in the water. I lost a bunch of tools, a phone some money and my digital camera they were all in a back pack that ended up floating all the way to Fort Vermillion and some very nice hunter found. The camera was pouched but his kinds were able to get the pictures off the memory stick and track me down through a license plate # and asked me if I wanted the stuff back. Pretty nice guys, thanks to all who helped make my rescue possible. If that river ever swells up like this again, I'll take anyone up there who's willing as long as we have a hamilton or equivalent pump and an easy clean, we plugged our grate and impeller up so many times from all the debris in the end thats what screwed us over.
THE END

I like to hear that other people also get windshields ripped off their boat... Maybe thats a better name for this post "Windshield eating rivers". The rest of the video would be priceless. Let me know when we are going boating together, and I'll bolt on a 1" skid plate and chainsaw to the front of my boat to avoid any further windshield removals, once is enough... almost
What I found out is that all rivers can be a real SOB without 500+ hp steering you in the right direction (no HP's at all=broken glass)
That is what makes it a sport for the thick skinned, I also am a man that goes down with the ship. Sounds like a true captan was piloting that vessel.
Glad you guys made it out safe!
DK
My best memories are perched on the front of my 21' pushing off of 24" stumps hanging 10' off the bank @ 12mph, don't think I want to try that at 20mph. Nice work guys

I'm stunned at this .
Why ?
Drugs ?
Alcohol ?
The end result was a given for anyone ever having a plugged intake . No amount of HP will help if you can't get fluid in to pump out or did you forget about that ?
With the mud floe you were in anyone sober would have had that thought to stop themselves .
Call it hindsight , call me a pussy ,come on guys that was a STUPID IDEA .
I wish I could afford to throw away money like that .
Usually the gov. does that because it's easy to spend others money . Taxpayers had to pay for those 25 or did you forget that too ?
This will only affect the decision makers to put more rules on boating , thanks for nothing guys .
PS
I am glad that you made it out alive regardless ! Geez
