Hello, I recently bought a used 2003 16' V-Sport w/ 240 SJ motor. I am fairly new to jet boating. The boat seems to be in good condition and previous owner estimates 120 hours on it. I already have a motor service manual ordered but do not know how long it will take to arrive. What should I check or service before taking the boat out for the first time? Next question is what items do you carry in the boat when going out besides the standard safety items. Spare parts? Tools? Any tips are appreciated.

1st thing to check and keep an eye on is the 2 bolts on the front of the intake grate. If you keep up the reg maintenance, use good oil and gas you should get a turn key season with no issues. I've got 2 season pretty much Wo everywhere...heres to 3 more years of pump to pwrhead warranty Cool

The 240 is about as maintenance free as it gets. I don't usually carry any spare parts (other than an extra ball cap and ear plugs), and have never had any issues.
Ok....I ran out of oil once. They run very cold, and are hard on plugs, so change your plugs at least every season. If anything you may want to carry extra fuel filters. The part that wears out the fastest is the impellor clearance to the wear ring. A stainless wear ring and a mercury high skew impellor are a good upgrade if you don't already have them. Check your clearance, factory is around 30 to 40 thou. Usually the time to rebuild is when approaching 100 thou clearance. Rebuild to 20 thou. Run regular fuel, the computer is set up for it. Like ntj said the grate bolts are an issue, more so if it has a stomp grate. Check them often. Also check your steering cables & linkages, those little white plastic bushings get worn after a few seasons.

Happy boating
