I will be racing a jet boat for the first time in this year's Rio Balsas Marathon after 15 years of no racing at all.
My experience is only in outboard classes such as the Mod VP from the late eighties-early nineties. I'm pretty sure that I persuaded an old buddy with a some experience in river racing to team-up as my navigator, but I need all the advice I can get.
What kind of practice/training can I do on a lake to drive and get get better acquainted with the boat? What kind of spare parts should I have? What kind of helmet, life jacket are best?
What kind of rookie mistakes can you help me avoid?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Life Jackets: Lifeline "Poker run" or similar. Capsule jackets are ok, but dont float that much.
Helmet: I like the ones that are all closed but can open the full face.

You need to put a roll bar on that boat.

Spare parts: One impeller. One thrust bearing (balero de la turbina); One bowl bearing (Buje del "huevo"). Spark Plugs. Spare MSD ignition module (if you are using one); Spare Coil and, very important: Spare battery and starter (marcha). Of course, engine oil and tools are a must.

Most common failures are jet bearing failure, starter failure and motor melting up (In which case you're pretty much done, as the mexican FX class ruling does not allow for engine change in one race).

You know I could have answered all in Spanish, but that would be a lack of courtesy for the rest of the readers...

Hey Wilson,

Thanks. This is exactly the answer I needed! As soon as I make up my mind regarding which boat I'm buying, I'll have to get all the stuff that you mentioned. I wish I knew where all my boat stuff is!
