Hi, I'm thinking of popping over to Grande Prairie this weekend. Where is the best place to put in on the Smokey? I have sen trucks at the highway bridge heading to Edmonton is that where? Also how far of a run is it before it gets thin or ?? Is there lots of spots to stop and have a hotdog or??

You can put in at the hwy if you want and there's plenty of water up and down, and lots of places to park for lunch. Depends how long a drive you want, you can put in at GP, drive down the Wapiti to the Smoky and then go up. The Wapiti is nice this time of year, a little low but you shouldn't have a problem, I took my 19 ft Sport down last weekend and I had no problem.

About 40 miles up the Smoky (from the Hwy bridge) is the Smoky Flats campground (about a 1/2 hr vehicle drive south of GP on Hwy 40), might be a good staging area, you can go up stream one day and down the next. Up stream has some 5+/- ft rollers where the Cutbank River flows in, and a few more miles up to the Smoky Chutes, which I heard were fairly tame the other day.

Either way you go, you can go as far as your gas will take you. The weekend is suppose to be nice so there should be some other boaters around if you have any questions.

Enjoy your weekend, we don't have many left! Mad

You can put in on the Wapiti at either "Magoo's", a launch just below the Weyerhauser pulp mill or at Wapiti Gardens, south of Beaverlodge. It's real nice upstream from the Gardens but it's going to get a little skinny in spots, depends what kind of boat you are running. It's about 40 miles up to the Narraway river.
