just a question: who is buying all these used ct525's for 3000$ and LSX454's for 5000$ when they're done 2 seasons of racing?

Hot rodders, drag racers, pleasure boaters. Who wouldn't want an all aluminum 525hp CT motor for $4000-$5000 and the LSX 454 with 620 hp for $5000-$6000. Look in Quick Times magazine and guys are asking that much and more for antiquated and heavy SBC and BBC's with less power.
You'll also probably find guys setting up their Pre run boats with their old motors.

We can have our own rules, and he the UIM book as a guideline, but if we find something that works, we can just do it, while respecting input from other countries. |
I have also thought about this option and have realized that there would be some serious challenges;
- if every country does their own thing, classes would probably be so different that it would be difficult to have a World event.
- It would be expensive and logistically difficult (but not impossible) to have representatives from all 4 countries meet yearly to discuss proposed changes and reach a consensus.

The experiment and trial this year worked out really well and now we have the issue of deciding what to do with the outcome.
I agree we can't keep making up classes every two or three years, but if something is popular like both of these motors, shouldn't the executive try to fit them in competitively
What happens to racers when they have gone the 115 mph with the LSX? There should be somewhere to go rather than a turbine |
I don't have a problem with the A Spec (which should be more accurately called U Spec), just separate it out of A class,

would either of these engines run on a pump premium like shell gold ? and if so would you be losing much if any hp from the avgas or just taking the chance of getting a bad fill ?

Race forums been a bit boring recently so thought would add my 10c having read the above thread:)
6 months ago I was LSX all the way but now .....
LSX a faster version of CX and have no doubt will be just as reliable and can use the same gear - but at the end of the day its not how fast the boat goes on the GPS that really matters but how fast you go relative to the competition and the track you're racing.
If going to just be a dollar driven decision then better just having everyone stay in CX where there is a great competition with reliable engines. However, with the numbers of CX getting so high in Canada the queue for the podium must be getting very congested so is room for a new class.
A-spec (perhaps time to come up with a new name....), however, offers a totally different alternative for people wanting something between crate and turbine. Ideally a bit heavier boat as not need to fly it as much, more robust gear plus a lot more upkeep. Yes a lot more expensive than converting to LSX but also a good home for some of the older heavier boats and should be a heck of a lot cheaper than some of the unlimited options.
How the numbers of each looking?
Both will be great and look forward to seeing how they perform next year in Canada. Will be interesting to see what follows through here in NZ. Still think the LSX would be a serious contender here in A- Class....
BTW I think your rule changes are bang-on to let the numbers that turn up determine what is best for the sport going forward.

Just finishing up on the LSX rules here for Canada. Not sure about the A spec rules yet havent heard anything about the rules for them. There has been some recent developments regarding racers not sticking to the rules in other classes. So we may be tightening up the rules for this class in order to curb any thoughts of racers trying the same things.

A- Spec rules, as far as I know, are basic, everyone will be running the same motor from the same engine builder, and from talking to Louie, the 3 motors that have been built to date are EXRTEMELY close regarding HP and Torque, this will be a racer guided class, so if something changes regarding motors, all racers in this class will have access to the newer technology if they wish, this should put a 120 mph class in the hands of the driver rather than the pocket book

The A-Spec rules will not change from last year. At this time all Aspec engines are being build at AMS in Edmonton (780-454-4411).
The only way a A-Spec rule change will happen is if we see a problem part used in the engine then we as a group if racers will deside when and what the change will be. after the first year we have seen the wet sump oil pan get changed to a dry sump pan. Ingnition systems and exhaust headers are not spec'd, so they may be differand between boats.
Attached is the start of an aticial the was published in a engine builder magazine. it does a good job of braking down the concept of a "Spec engine class".
The rest of the aticile is some dry reading, that goes indepth on the LS2 engine that they are running in their SPEC class.

Dale, as far as the A spec engine goes, is it mandatory that AMS builds the engine? If not then I would expect a full set of specifications be publicly available. I have nothing against AMS but I could see someone wanting to be in the class that may build his own engines or have a another shop that they deal with.

We are trying to get everyone to understand the theory of the “spec engine”, in that only one builder builds the engines for the class. This is the best and only way to keep all the engines the same. It is really no different that GM building all the engines for CX and FX only here we can get our builder to fix a problem in all the engines whereas with GM we have to live with the problem and try to work around it.
There will come a time when other builders will be allowed to build the engine and a parts kit will be sold to that engine builder. But until the class grows and takes off within the UIM. We are going to stick to ONE engine builder.
So as for the 2014 race year the rule will read the same as last year:
AMS Engines Spec Engine 565cubic inches.
OR
"A" class rules not excedding 470 cubic inches.
ect. ect. ect. ect.

There are the two that ran in 2013 and AMS has deposits for 5 more Canadians and 2 in New Zealand. We Should see 5-7 in the Canadian series for 2014.
