i heard you can't make it all the way to mabel there is some falls that prevent it but other than that I don't think its a big deal we used to take a big waterskiboat to the grindrod bar for beer and nachoes in between waterski runs all the time !!! great bar right on the river |

Is there any gas pumps on this river? Also which part of the river are these falls on.
Thanks _________________ 19' Hammerhead. |

I haven't been on the Shuswap for 15 years or so, but it is certainly navigable from Mara Lake to Hupple, about 3 km downstream of Mable Lake. Skookumchuck Rapids, at Hupple, is a series of cascades in a tight bedrock canyon. I can't remember how big the drops are or how tight the corners are. We never went into the canyon (90hp outboards on flat-bottom 16 footers), but it might be worth taking a look with a modern sled and good power. Downstream, the mainstem is very navigable. One short and easy rapid at Cook Creek otherwise it is a 30m-ish wide, relatively deep meandering channel (with some very slow lakelike sections). There are numerous large logjams and some challenging sidechannels. A word of caution; around Enderby the river is pretty popular with tubers and swimmers. Also, there is a chinook salmon fishery (late Aug/early Sept I think). It is primarily shore-based and from what I remember most anglers didn't take too kindly to boaters especially in the tighter sections. As for gas, the only pump that used to be on the river it above the rapids right at the Mable outlet. Enderby is right on the river, but the nearest pump is several hundred meters away. All in all, it is a great river. Have fun. |

We just got back from the Shuswap. You can't make it right to Mable Lake from Mara right now. A few guys down there said you could do it when the water is high. There is a small set of fall and big rocky rapids just before Mable.
The last few miles get exciting. Well worth the trip. Next time I would just run from Enderby up. _________________ 19' Hammerhead. |
