Here's what i think! Idea air plane wing but leave about 1/8"-3/16" (taper to inside of pump) if you have an 8 bar grate sharpen the inside of them 4 lefts 4 rights idea is to direct water around the main pump shaft

Sorry for the terrible explanation. I will try to post a pic today.

Kevo Ive seen some older Eagle grates that have a blocked out center section, is that something you would suggest?

Cheers

Sorry we don't have any sharpened grates lying around here. somebody out there must have some pics for us. Xero people are constantly playing with the grates every set-up is a little different what works on one might not work on another, I know of some pretty fast guy's that use fibreglass bodyfiller to tinker with there grate openings

Agree with Kev-o

I did the airplane wing thing. Sharped the inside to a knife edge. There was a post I read on sportjetworld.com where a guy experimented with a bunch of different grate mod's on a 240 sj. The best speed improvement reported came from cutting out all center bars, but leaving the frame and two edge bars in place. Seemed a complete grate removal resulted in unexpected cavitation problems. I would not risk this on any river, all my bars are staying in place.

Speaking of great bars, I need another drink.

after doing this has anyone noticed if you get more gravel being wedge in the grates ,it seams like bigger pieces of gravel would be able to wedge themselves in tighter than when it is just stock . I have had in a couple of case ran through shallow areas and have had the stomp grate jamb (after we got back into the deep) because of this happening

If I'm looking at this right, there would be less wedge because the sharp edge goes toward the impeller side. Confused

The grate will pick up rocks way worse if its sharped or even slightly rounded on the outer edge, as it lets the rock in part way in rather than them rolling on by. My solution...I have two grates. My stock grate I keep the bars as flat, as square edged, and straight as possible. Those little 1 inch round or oval rocks love to wedge them selves in even with this grate. The race grate goes on just for racing. Its one of those compromise things to put up with if your willing. Chasing that illusive 0.10 mph increase in speed. Worth the effort on a sportjet ???
