have a 19 foot lynx with 5.7 efi and hammy pump. after launch and during warm up engine temp rises rapidly. have not let it get past 200, before shutting down. on restart temp drops rapidly to 160,and will stay at that all day. have swapped out the thermostat with no result. would appreciate hearing of any similar problems, and the cause that was identified.

I have had a bit of experiance in this field and I will tell you what I know. Your problem sounds funny because you said it goes away. Best way to start is to eliminate the easy things, which sounds like you already have begun....

-Remove or replace T-stat and check
-Pull the ends off the heat exchanger and ensure the holes are clear
-Pull the plugs out of your manifolds and check for debris build-up
-Verify your temp gauge is working correct with a temp gun
-Make sure your pump is sucking sufficent water and it's discharging threw the EXH properly

These are the simple steps that I went through only to find out after I had major head troubles. Hope you get er figured out.

here's one for you i cant figure out...zz4 equiped with phaze and bypass system runs all day long at 185 but when ever I shut it off temp climbs to 225deg and then she struggles to start.

I always listen for the exhaust note to change after my boat starts to confirm the water flow thru the exhaust. I used to have a crap sand trap that created such a cyclone, I believe it created an airlock or the like in the water feed. A quick shut down, or simply turning the tap in the water feed line off then on again got the water flowing properly, and stayed happy the rest of the day. Since replaced the trap, and the problem hasn't recurred. (unless I leave the water tap off Embarassed

thanks for the replies to my problem, checked the heat exchanger and the fuel cooler this morning, neither of them plugged. will check manifolds tomorrow and take a temp. sensor along next time out. went fishing this afternoon and the same problem was present.

drill a 3/16 hole in the thermostat ...you may be getting an airlock

thanks for the tip,never thought of drilling a hole. now i think we may be getting somewhere as i suspected air lock from the start

take a 180 deg thermostat,drill three 1/8 holes in it(indicated in red)and that should cure the heating spikes...

manifolds are clear.went back to the t stat....replacement t stat had no hole....oem t stat had one 1/8 hole.... now has three, probably going fishing towards evening. i will post the outcome. thanks everyone.

Went out yesterday and the problem seem to be solved, thanks to all of you for the interest and suggestions. The engine warmed up normally with out the heating spike. Even the fishing was better than it has been all year. 3 in the 30 to 40 lb. range.
