For 2010 Canadian rules. The LS class will be renamed to CX class and will allow any of the 376 or 392 crate motors from Dodge, Ford, or GM, all under 400 ci. Naturally asperated only.
More meeting results to be out later.
Happy now Will. |

My top 10 on the criteria that will keep this class successful;
1. based on a crate motor
2. affordable and readily available
3. has good reliability and longevity
4. expected to be available and unchanged for consecutive production years
5. brings new racers into the class
6. provides for competitive fairness
7. is easy to tech.
8. accepted by other countries
9. recognised by UIM
10. satisfies personal preference towards a particular manufacturer
The LS designation which originated in referance to the LS3 engine, was changed to CX as a gesture of good faith towards making this class open to all manufacturors. The CX stands for "Crate X-perimental". Lets hope that its as successful as the FX class.

I have done a lot of research on the LS engine over the last year in preperation for this class and the following is what I've found:
- Current MSRP on the sealed GM CT 525 at our local GM dealership is $700 less than the non sealed LS 376/515 version.
- The GM LS CT525 and LS376/515 are identicle engines except as follows;
-- LS376/515 Dynoed with 650 cfm carb, CT525 dynoed with 750 carb, giving it the additional 10 hp.
-- CT525 is sealed, comes with a superior baffled racing oil pan design for better oil control, ATI SFI racing harmonic balancer, timing chain tensioner changed to an LS2 tensioner designed for better chain control in FULL on/off throttle racing applications.
The only issue with any of the carbed LS engines for our type of racing is the Coil on Plug ignition system, the MSD/GM controller is poorly designed and can't recharge the coils fast enough after about 2 minutes at WOT. No one else but White Water Racers race at WOT for long extended periods. The EFI engines don't have this problem as they use either the factory ECU or an aftermarket ECU which works fine. I have spoken with many builders from the US and they confirmed the problem stems from the MSD/GM controller and the solution is either to switch to a distrbutor or use a GM/Delphi mefi 4 ecu, cut out the injector connectors and installed resistors, add a carb tps sensor and a map sensor. The mefi 4 will run off the factory cam and crank sensors and is very durable and easily tuneable. _________________ It's always the Navigators fault! |

How difficult would it be to put a distributor??? (I mean: selecting the proper one)
Does the "common" MSD distributor fit? Does it have to be a special space age thing?? _________________ Wisdom chases me, but I´m faster |

As DOC said, you can buy the front Distributor cover right from GM and is very easy to install.

Will R will like this....the front cover requires a standard Ford style Distributor and it also allows you to use a mechanical fuel pump if you like, but it must also be a Ford style, I guess GM figuired the LS motor was so strong that it would be unfair to Ford so they thought they should handicap themselves by using some Ford ideas. However. the GMPP catalogue also has a note that if you use the front distributor cover, "you have to use a special water pump, accessory drive and damper" I think Rob C would be the best person to ask about this as this is how his motor was set up.
As far as price goes, I think that once it's all said and done that both the GM and the Ford engines will be very close, the difference will be the type of ignition you choose. _________________ It's always the Navigators fault! |
