Leave it bare aluminum for now. Once its all scratched up, buff and polish. When its all scratched up again, then paint it.

If i were you, I would go for a 4stroke 6 hp Merc . Only 55 lbs and all you need for a 16' and 35 lbs lighter than an 8 hp.

I had the same issue. Could also smell hot antifreeze. Then it went away? Had been running some very skinny water prior so i think there was some debris in there that eventually worked its way out.
